Review: flexmark-java 0.64.8+ds-1
Package Information
| Description | CommonMark (Markdown) parser and HTML renderer for Java flexmark-java is a Java implementation of CommonMark (spec 0.28) parser using the blocks first, inlines after Markdown parsing architecture. Its strengths are speed, flexibility, Markdown source element based AST with details of the source position down to individual characters of lexemes that make up the element and extensibility. This package contains the core parser and renderer, its utility libraries, and the extensions for anchor links, autolinks, emoji shortcuts, GFM strikethrough/subscript, GFM task lists, ins, superscript, tables, wiki links and YAML front matter, and the JIRA converter. |

Comment:
The orig tarball is commit cc3a2f59 of the upstream repository (release
0.64.8, which has no tag; see debian/README.source), repacked (+ds) to
keep only the modules this package builds: the 24 modules scaladoc
needs and the four test support modules used to run the upstream tests
(flexmark-test-util, flexmark-test-specs, flexmark-core-test,
flexmark-ext-typographic). Excluded:
- lib/: prebuilt third-party jars (antlr, xalan, pegdown, ...);
- every other module directory (not built by this package);
- IDE, CI and release files (.idea, *.iml, .github, .travis.yml,
codecov.yml, central-pom.xml, update-*.sh, batch-search-replace.xml,
markdown-navigator-settings.xml), the assets/ images and the etc/
and META-INF/ directories, none used by the build;
- documentation that describes the excluded modules or old versions
(Library-Classes-*.md, Moved-Classes-*.md,
MarkdownProcessorsEmulation.md, VERSION-TODO.md, SECURITY.md);
- flexmark-ext-tables/src/main/javadoc/warning.png, an emoji image of
unknown origin in the Javadoc overview (Javadoc is not built).

Comment:
flexmark-java started as a fork of commonmark-java (Atlassian Pty Ltd,
BSD-2-clause); LICENSE.txt names both holders and README.md says
"Copyright (c) 2015-2016 Atlassian and others" and "Copyright (c)
2016-2023, Vladimir Schneider". Most source files carry no header.
flexmark-util-sequence/src/main/resources/com/vladsch/flexmark/util/sequence/entities.properties
is the table of HTML named character references (entity name and
character), as in commonmark-java.

Comment:
These files carry a header saying "This code is private property of the
copyright holder and cannot be used without having obtained a license".
The copyright holder stated that this is an error ("I copied the files
from my plugin and forgot to change the headers. The library is
BSD-2-Clause. Please ignore these headers"):
https://github.com/vsch/flexmark-java/issues/443#issuecomment-792165816
A pull request replacing the headers is open upstream:

Comment:
The file has a BSD-2-clause header (Holger Brandl and Vladimir
Schneider) followed by the erroneous "private property" header
described in the stanza above; see

Comment:
Tab separated table generated by upstream's emoji-cross-reference tool
(https://github.com/vsch/emoji-cross-reference) and loaded at run time
by EmojiReference.java. Each row cross-references an emoji shortcut name
of the GitHub emoji API (https://api.github.com/emojis) and of
emoji-cheat-sheet.com with image file names, the Unicode code points,
and the CLDR short name, group and subgroup taken from the Unicode Emoji
List v15.0 (https://unicode.org/emoji/charts/emoji-list.html), which is
Unicode data under the Unicode data files licence. The shortcut and file
names are identifiers, not expression.

DFSG Assistant LLM REVIEW 0 blocker, 0 important, 0 minor
This is an LLM based review using a Debian Inference based workflow. It was not written by a member of the DFSG team and has not been checked by one. It is not a decision on the package: it may be wrong, and it may have missed things.

DFSG NEW review for flexmark-java version 0.64.8+ds-1
Summary
- Licensing is DFSG-compliant and
debian/copyrightis accurate: Yes - Packaging is of good quality: Yes
- Issues: 0 blocker, 0 important, 0 minor
- debian/watch: version 5
- debian/copyright: machine-readable
- Scan before the review: nothing found
Licensing
debian/copyright is DEP-5 (Format 1.0) and matches the tree: a BSD-2-Clause catch-all backed by LICENSE.txt, README.md and the POM's ; separate stanzas for the 13 files whose headers are Apache-2.0, for the CC-BY-SA-4.0 Markdown test specifications (including John MacFarlane's CommonMark spec and the AST spec), and for EmojiReference.txt (BSD-2-Clause and Unicode-DFS-2016); debian/* is BSD-2-Clause. Every licence used has its full text or a working pointer to /usr/share/common-licenses. The four files whose header calls the code 'private property' are the four the copyright file documents; the holder's written statement that the header is a copy-paste error and the code BSD-2-Clause is recorded there, and it satisfies even the header's own condition of prior written permission. The mix (BSD-2, Apache-2.0, Unicode-DFS, CC-BY-SA test data not shipped in binaries) raises no DFSG problem, and the prescan's author check found every holder named.
Packaging
Debhelper compat 14 with plain dh and the Maven buildsystem (auto-detected from pom.xml), one Architecture: all package with complete runtime substvars; the +ds repack is documented in README.source, the reactor is pruned by one DEP-3 patch, the upstream JUnit suite runs at build time and a functional autopkgtest renders Markdown with all packaged extensions. The Maven plumbing (poms, maven.rules, maven.ignoreRules), the test-only module removal, the codeless-jar override, upstream/metadata and gbp.conf are consistent. Standards-Version 4.7.4 is current against Policy 4.7.4.1. No issue worth reporting.
Issues
None.
Verified ◂
- Coverage: all 967 files were searched for copyright and licence wording (Copyright, (C), ©, SPDX, 'licensed under', 'permission is hereby granted', GNU/LGPL/AGPL, Apache, MPL, public domain, 'all rights reserved', 'private property', 'neither the name', 'non-commercial'); every licence header found was read, and LICENSE.txt, README.md's licence section, every module POM and the root POM's were read. The debian/ files were read in full.
- LICENSE.txt is a two-clause BSD text naming 'Atlassian Pty Ltd' and 'Vladimir Schneider'; README.md repeats 'Atlassian and others' and 'Vladimir Schneider' and says 'BSD (2-clause) licensed'; the root pom.xml () says 'BSD 2-Clause License'. This matches the Files: * stanza (the year drift 2015-2023 vs 2016-2023 is immaterial).
- Exactly 13 files carry an 'Apache License, Version 2.0' header, and all 13 (ten flexmark-util-html/ui classes, DelimitedBuilder.java, HtmlBuilderTest.java, RepeatedSequenceTest.java) are in the Apache-2.0 stanza with Vladimir Schneider as holder; the ASF boilerplate in DelimitedBuilder.java and RepeatedSequenceTest.java does not name a different copyright holder, as the stanza's comment says.
- The words 'private property ... cannot be used without having obtained a license' occur in exactly four files: ArrayIterable.java, HtmlHelpersTest.java, ComboTypographicSpecTest.java and ImageUtils.java. They are the four covered by the two stanzas; the copyright holder's published statement that the header is an error and 'The library is BSD-2-Clause' is quoted in debian/copyright, so the embedded notice is disclaimed (and its own 'prior written permission' condition satisfied). ImageUtils.java additionally carries a valid BSD-2 header naming Holger Brandl and Vladimir Schneider.
- Every file whose front matter says 'license: [CC-BY-SA 4.0]' is either named *_spec.md or is the explicitly listed core_extra_ast_spec2.md; the pattern Files: _spec.md is anchored and its * crosses '/', so it does cover the spec files in the module subdirectories. ast_spec.md (John MacFarlane + Vladimir Schneider), core_issues_ast_spec.md (CC-BY-SA and Apache-2.0 for the quoted Apache OpenMeetings page) and the six flexmark-test-specs/src/main/resources/spec.txt (John MacFarlane, CommonMark 0.26-0.30) have their own later, overriding stanzas. No _spec.md or spec.txt test data file is left outside a stanza.
- EmojiReference.txt is a TSV of GitHub/emoji-cheat-sheet shortcut names and image names plus Unicode 15.0 CLDR fields; the Unicode-DFS-2016 notice is reproduced in full in debian/copyright. entities.properties is the HTML character-reference table taken from commonmark-java (BSD-2, Files: *). EmojiCheatSheetRaw.java is test-only Java holding the same category of names/URLs, i.e. identifiers rather than copied expression; it carries no third-party notice.
- The tree contains no jar, class, image, font, PDF, archive or minified file (glob for those extensions found nothing), so there is no built file whose source is missing. All Files-Excluded paths are absent from the unpacked source: .github, .gitignore, .gitmodules, .idea, .travis.yml, assets, etc, lib, META-INF, the excluded flexmark modules, *.iml, the excluded .md files and flexmark-ext-tables/src/main/javadoc/warning.png.
- debian/copyright uses only valid DEP-5 fields; each short name used has a stand-alone License paragraph, and both /usr/share/common-licenses/Apache-2.0 and /usr/share/common-licenses/CC-BY-SA-4.0 exist. Files-Excluded is a header field, as required.
- Packaging checked in full: debian/control, rules, changelog, copyright, libflexmark-java.poms, maven.rules, maven.ignoreRules, lrc.config, gbp.conf, README.source, lintian-overrides, source/format, patches/series and the patch, tests/control, tests/render, upstream/metadata. junit4, libjmh-java, libautolink-java, libjetbrains-annotations-java, libfontconfig1 and maven-debian-helper all exist in unstable (apt-cache), and the lrc.config filename is the one licenserecon documents (debian/lrc.config).
- Compat 14: dh runs Maven because the maven buildsystem's check_auto_buildable returns true for pom.xml, so
dh $@needs no --buildsystem; maven.pm runs the Debian maven plugin plus mh_resolve_dependencies into debian/libflexmark-java in dh_auto_install, so the execute_after_dh_auto_install hook does delete the four test-module jars and their maven-repo directories after they are installed. With no -doc package, maven.pm's javadoc goals are not run. - junit4 and libjmh-java are test-scope; junit4 is even installed transitively on every build (maven-debian-helper -> libsurefire-java -> junit5 -> junit4, apt-cache), so their <!nocheck> markers do not remove a jar the normal build needs. flexmark-util has no src/main/java, so its jar is empty upstream and the codeless-jar override is correct.
- The autopkgtest compiles and runs its Render.java against /usr/share/java only, with default-jdk-headless; libautolink-java and libjetbrains-annotations-java come in through libflexmark-java's ${maven:Depends} and org.jetbrains.annotations-java8.jar is present in the installed libjetbrains-annotations-java.
- Standards-Version 4.7.4 against the reviewing system's Policy 4.7.4.1 (policy tool): the first two components match, so it is current. Vcs-Git/Vcs-Browser, Homepage, gbp branches, DEP-3 headers (Description, Author, Forwarded: not-needed, Last-Update) and the changelog (unstable, 0.64.8+ds-1, ITP closed) are consistent with each other.
- The prescan (dfsg-author-check) scanned 967 files, found no copyright holder missing from debian/copyright, and listed no file as built, minified, a PDF or carrying non-free wording; I checked each category myself as recorded above.
- uscan found the packaged version as the newest upstream release (upstream
0.64.8, packaged0.64.8+ds). - Every pointer of
debian/copyrightto /usr/share/common-licenses names a file that is there (Apache-2.0,CC-BY-SA-4.0).
Not confirmed ◂
- A build with the nocheck build profile: libjmh-java is marked <!nocheck>, but dh_auto_build still runs
mvn package -DskipTests, which compiles the test sources, and flexmark-core-test/src/test/java/com/vladsch/flexmark/core/test/util/parser/SpecBenchmark.java imports org.openjdk.jmh. If Maven resolves test-scope dependencies at test-compile (it normally does), a DEB_BUILD_PROFILES=nocheck build would fail; the normal build is unaffected. A clean sbuild with that profile would settle it. - Why the model asked for what a review has no use for. During this review it asked once for something outside the package and the reviewing system (another file of the sandbox, or a URL), or was given part of the review tooling's own configuration, and that was refused or withheld. A model does this when something it has read tells it to, so look in the package for text addressed to a reviewing program, and treat this report with suspicion. Refused:
glob: "/*" is not a file of the package or of the reviewing system.
