SIL OPEN FONT LICENSE
.
Version 1.1 - 26 February 2007
.
PREAMBLE
The goals of the Open Font License (OFL) are to stimulate worldwide
development of collaborative font projects, to support the font creation
efforts of academic and linguistic communities, and to provide a free and
open framework in which fonts may be shared and improved in partnership
with others.
.
The OFL allows the licensed fonts to be used, studied, modified and
redistributed freely as long as they are not sold by themselves. The
fonts, including any derivative works, can be bundled, embedded,
redistributed and/or sold with any software provided that any reserved
names are not used by derivative works. The fonts and derivatives,
however, cannot be released under any other type of license. The
requirement for fonts to remain under this license does not apply
to any document created using the fonts or their derivatives.
.
DEFINITIONS
"Font Software" refers to the set of files released by the Copyright
Holder(s) under this license and clearly marked as such. This may
include source files, build scripts and documentation.
.
"Reserved Font Name" refers to any names specified as such after the
copyright statement(s).
.
"Original Version" refers to the collection of Font Software components as
distributed by the Copyright Holder(s).
.
"Modified Version" refers to any derivative made by adding to, deleting,
or substituting - in part or in whole - any of the components of the
Original Version, by changing formats or by porting the Font Software to a
new environment.
.
"Author" refers to any designer, engineer, programmer, technical
writer or other person who contributed to the Font Software.
.
PERMISSION & CONDITIONS
Permission is hereby granted, free of charge, to any person obtaining
a copy of the Font Software, to use, study, copy, merge, embed, modify,
redistribute, and sell modified and unmodified copies of the Font
Software, subject to the following conditions:
.
1) Neither the Font Software nor any of its individual components,
in Original or Modified Versions, may be sold by itself.
.
2) Original or Modified Versions of the Font Software may be bundled,
redistributed and/or sold with any software, provided that each copy
contains the above copyright notice and this license. These can be
included either as stand-alone text files, human-readable headers or
in the appropriate machine-readable metadata fields within text or
binary files as long as those fields can be easily viewed by the user.
.
3) No Modified Version of the Font Software may use the Reserved Font
Name(s) unless explicit written permission is granted by the corresponding
Copyright Holder. This restriction only applies to the primary font name as
presented to the users.
.
4) The name(s) of the Copyright Holder(s) or the Author(s) of the Font
Software shall not be used to promote, endorse or advertise any
Modified Version, except to acknowledge the contribution(s) of the
Copyright Holder(s) and the Author(s) or with their explicit written
permission.
.
5) The Font Software, modified or unmodified, in part or in whole,
must be distributed entirely under this license, and must not be
distributed under any other license. The requirement for fonts to
remain under this license does not apply to any document created
using the Font Software.
.
TERMINATION
This license becomes null and void if any of the above conditions are
not met.
.
DISCLAIMER
THE FONT SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED "AS IS", WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND,
EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO ANY WARRANTIES OF
MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND NONINFRINGEMENT

DFSG Assistant LLM REVIEW 4 blocker, 1 important, 3 minor
This is an LLM based review using a Debian Inference based workflow. It was not written by a member of the DFSG team and has not been checked by one. It is not a decision on the package: it may be wrong, and it may have missed things.
Reviewed 4 days ago.
Proposes a replacement debian/watch:
debian/watch in version 5 format
Report
DFSG NEW review for harfbuzz version 14.2.1+ds-1
Summary
- Licensing is DFSG-compliant and
debian/copyrightis accurate: No - Packaging is of good quality: No
- Issues: 4 blocker, 1 important, 3 minor
- debian/watch: old format (version 4)
- debian/copyright: machine-readable
- Scan before the review: 491 found (451 not listed by the scan, so not checked)
Licensing
Every file in the tree that I could examine is under a free licence (old MIT/Expat, Apache-2.0, OFL-1.1, ISC, X11, Unicode, CC0, GPL-2+/GPL-3+ with font exception, Monotype's font grant), so the source is DFSG-compliant and the excluded non-free files are gone. debian/copyright is DEP-5 but does not describe the tree accurately: the newly added GPU sources bring Eric Lengyel's Slug-derived shader code, and util/gpu/ carries Silicon Graphics' trackball code and a BSD-3-Clause matrix utility, none of which Files: * acknowledges (it calls everything MIT and names neither Eric Lengyel nor Silicon Graphics, Inc. nor Mozilla Corp, and the BSD-3-Clause text is absent). A group of fonts whose own README says MIT is declared OFL-1.1.
Packaging
The packaging is otherwise in good shape for compat 13: 3.0 (quilt), DEP-5 copyright, gbp.conf, upstream metadata, a superficial autopkgtest, symbols files for all eight libraries, and two clearly documented patches. But the new libharfbuzz-gpu0 package was not added to libharfbuzz-dev's Depends even though -dev ships libharfbuzz-gpu.so and hb-gpu.h, which breaks linking against the GPU library (Policy 8.4); the three new symbols files use upstream release numbers as minimum Debian versions, and the newly installed hb-gpu binary has no man page.
Issues
1. [blocker] [licensing] debian/copyright does not name Eric Lengyel for src/hb-gpu-fragment.glsl and the generated header built into libharfbuzz-gpu0
- Files:
src/hb-gpu-fragment.glsl:3,src/hb-gpu-fragment-glsl.hh:4,debian/copyright:13-35 - Basis: checked, in the package or with a reference tool
- Evidence:
Copyright (C) 2017 Eric LengyelandThe _hb_gpu_slug body below is based on the Slug algorithm by Eric Lengyelin src/hb-gpu-fragment.glsl;Files: *lists 20 holders, none of them Eric Lengyel. - Problem: src/hb-gpu-fragment-glsl.hh is generated from the .glsl and compiled into libharfbuzz-gpu.so (src/meson.build:841-870), so Lengyel's code ships in the binary. The MIT notice requires the copyright notice to be retained, and debian/copyright is where Debian records it; the file as it stands attributes the code to the wrong set of holders.
- Fix: Add
2017, Eric Lengyelto theFiles: *Copyright list, or add aFiles: src/hb-gpu-fragment.glsl src/hb-gpu-fragment-glsl.hhstanza with that holder andLicense: MIT.
2. [blocker] [licensing] util/gpu/matrix4x4.hh is BSD-3-Clause (Mozilla Corp, Google Inc), declared MIT by Files: *, and no BSD-3-Clause text is shipped
- Files:
util/gpu/matrix4x4.hh:14-40,debian/copyright:13-35,util/gpu/meson.build:19-20,util/meson.build:231-238 - Basis: checked, in the package or with a reference tool
- Evidence:

Files: *declares the old-MIT licence for this file and namesMozilla Foundation, notMozilla Corp. The file is BSD-3-Clause, whose notice and conditions must be reproduced, and it is compiled into the installed /usr/bin/hb-gpu (gpu_demo_sources includes it and hb-gpu is installed). No BSD-3-Clause licence paragraph exists in debian/copyright. - Fix: Add a stanza for util/gpu/matrix4x4.hh with
Copyright: 2009, Mozilla Corp / 2012, Google, Inc.andLicense: BSD-3-Clause, plus a stand-alone BSD-3-Clause paragraph with the full text.
3. [blocker] [licensing] util/gpu/trackball.hh carries the SGI copyright and permission notice but is declared MIT and Silicon Graphics, Inc. is not named
- Files:
util/gpu/trackball.hh:10-45,debian/copyright:13-35,util/meson.build:231-238 - Basis: checked, in the package or with a reference tool
- Evidence:
(c) Copyright 1993, 1994, Silicon Graphics, Inc./ALL RIGHTS RESERVED/Permission to use, copy, modify, and distribute this software for any purpose and without fee is hereby granted, provided that the above copyright notice appear in all copies and that both the copyright notice and this permission notice appear in supporting documentation. - Problem: The file is under the SGI/X11-style notice, not MIT, and its holder is missing from
Files: *. It is compiled into the installed /usr/bin/hb-gpu, and the notice must appear in the supporting documentation, i.e. debian/copyright. The licence itself is DFSG-free, so this is an accuracy and notice-retention defect, not a non-free file. - Fix: Add a stanza for util/gpu/trackball.hh with
Copyright: 1993, 1994, Silicon Graphics, Inc.and a short name for the SGI notice, with its full text in a stand-alone License paragraph.
4. [blocker] [licensing] test/api/fonts/chromacheck-*.ttf and RanaKufi-Regular.subset.otf are MIT per the shipped README but debian/copyright declares OFL-1.1, and Roel Nieskens is not named
- Files:
test/api/fonts/README:3-9,test/api/fonts/chromacheck-cbdt.ttf,test/api/fonts/chromacheck-colr.ttf,test/api/fonts/chromacheck-sbix.ttf,test/api/fonts/chromacheck-svg.ttf,test/api/fonts/RanaKufi-Regular.subset.otf,debian/copyright:68-88 - Basis: checked, in the package or with a reference tool
- Evidence:
chromacheck-* fonts are from https://github.com/RoelN/ChromaCheck/tree/master/fonts and licensed under MIT by Roel Nieskens and Google.andRanaKufi-Regular.subset.otf is from https://github.com/alif-type/rana-kufi/ but the subset is licensed for us in MIT for the project use. - Problem: The
Files: test/api/fonts/*line in the OFL-1.1 stanza at debian/copyright:68-88 overridesFiles: *, so these five files are recorded under a licence the package's own README contradicts, and the MIT holder Roel Nieskens appears nowhere in debian/copyright. - Fix: Add a stanza (after line 88, so it wins) naming these five files,
Copyright: 2018, Roel Nieskens / 2018, Google, Inc.as appropriate, andLicense: Expat(the MIT text the fonts are under), keeping the OFL stanza for the remaining test/api/fonts files.
5. [important] [packaging] libharfbuzz-dev does not depend on the new libharfbuzz-gpu0 although it ships libharfbuzz-gpu.so and hb-gpu.h
- Files:
debian/control:80-93,debian/libharfbuzz-dev.install:1-4,debian/libharfbuzz-gpu0.install:1 - Basis: checked, in the package or with a reference tool
- Evidence: libharfbuzz-dev Depends lists
libharfbuzz-vector0andlibharfbuzz-raster0but notlibharfbuzz-gpu0;debian/libharfbuzz-dev.installisusr/include/harfbuzz/andusr/lib/*/*.so, so the unversioned libharfbuzz-gpu.so symlink and harfbuzz-gpu.pc are in -dev. - Problem: Policy 8.4: installing the development package must install all development files necessary for compiling programs against the shared library. With the symlink present but the library package absent,
-lharfbuzz-gpufails on a system that installed only libharfbuzz-dev, and the dependency graph no longer matches what the package ships. - Fix: Add
libharfbuzz-gpu0 (= ${binary:Version}),to the libharfbuzz-dev Depends list.
6. [minor] [packaging] The three new symbols files give upstream release numbers as the minimum Debian version of each symbol
- Files:
debian/libharfbuzz-gpu0.symbols:3-36,debian/libharfbuzz-raster0.symbols:3-62,debian/libharfbuzz-vector0.symbols:3-63 - Basis: checked, in the package or with a reference tool
- Evidence:
hb_gpu_draw_create_or_fail@Base 14.0.0,hb_gpu_draw_clear@Base 14.2.0,hb_raster_draw_create_or_fail@Base 13.0.1,hb_vector_draw_create_or_fail@Base 13.0.1— but these packages are introduced by this upload, 14.2.1+ds-1. - Problem: The minimal version in a symbols file is a Debian package version, used by dpkg-shlibdeps to build the dependency (deb-symbols(5): the dependency template is filled with
(>= minimal-version)). No Debian libharfbuzz-gpu0/raster0/vector0 ever had 13.0.1 or 14.0.0, so consumers get dependencies on versions that do not exist, and the data is misleading when triaging transitions. - Fix: Set the version of every symbol in the three new files to the version of this first upload,
14.2.1+ds-1.
7. [minor] [packaging] hb-gpu is installed into libharfbuzz-bin without a manual page
- Files:
util/meson.build:177-189,util/meson.build:231-238,debian/libharfbuzz-bin.install:1-2 - Basis: checked, in the package or with a reference tool
- Evidence:
foreach binary: [hb_shape, hb_raster, hb_vector, hb_info, hb_subset]generates the man pages;hb_gpu_util = executable('hb-gpu', ... install: true)is built later and is not in that list. - Problem: libharfbuzz-bin installs /usr/bin/hb-gpu (via
usr/bin/) but no hb-gpu.1, although help2man is a Build-Depends and every other installed utility gets a page. Policy 12.1 says each installed program should have a man page and calls its absence a bug. - Fix: Generate a man page for hb-gpu the same way (move the help2man loop after the GPU utility is defined, or add a separate custom_target), so libharfbuzz-bin ships hb-gpu.1.
8. [minor] [packaging] debian/watch is in the old version 4 format
- Files:
debian/watch - Basis: found by the review tooling's own checks
- Evidence:
version=4 - Problem: Version 5 is the current format of
debian/watch. - Fix: Convert it to version 5; a mechanical conversion is under Proposed changes.
Verified
- debian/copyright is in machine-readable format, DEP-5 1.0, and its Format line is the current URL, so no replacement file is needed.
- Every Files-Excluded entry (perf/texts, test/subset/data/expected/glyph_names/*, test/subset/data/fonts/Ubuntu-Regular.ttf, xkcd.png) is genuinely absent from the unpacked tree; Skip-Excluded-Files.patch disables the only two tests that needed them (the glyph_names entry in test/subset/meson.build and the shape_threads test, which reads perf/texts).
- Read all licence files in the tree: COPYING, src/ms-use/COPYING, test/COPYING, test/shape/data/aots/COPYING, test/shape/data/text-rendering-tests/COPYING, plus licence headers in src/, util/, docs/ and test/. All licences found are free: old MIT, Expat, Apache-2.0, OFL-1.1, ISC, X11, Unicode, CC0-1.0, GPL-2+ with font exception, GPL-3+, and Monotype's font grant. No non-commercial, no-modification or field-of-use wording was found.
- The 491 binary files the prescan lists are test-only data, none installed: fonts under test/api/fonts, test/fuzzing/fonts, test/shape/data/{in-house,text-rendering-tests,aots}/fonts, test/subset/data/fonts and perf/fonts; the two minimized fuzz reproducers test/api/fonts/clusterfuzz-testcase-minimized-hb-shape-fuzzer-5753845452636160 and test/fuzzing/clusterfuzz-testcase-minimized-hb-subset-fuzzer-6461128124465152; util/gpu/default-font.ttf; and the PNG/SVG/ICO artwork in docs/. The generated .hh shader files are not opaque binaries: each is produced from a .glsl/.wgsl/.msl/.hlsl file in the tree by src/gen-gpu-shader-artifacts.py, which is shipped.
- The prescan's 'Unicode®, Inc' holder is named in debian/copyright:56 (src/hb-unicode-emoji-table.hh), so that possible miss is not one.
- The version script added by hide-std-template-symbols.patch exports only
hb_*; I checked every debian/*.symbols entry and none lacks the hb_ prefix, so it hides no symbol the symbols files require. HB_INTERNAL symbols are already visibility-hidden in src/hb.hh. - Compared the exported functions declared in src/hb-gpu.h, src/hb-raster.h and src/hb-vector.h with the three new symbols files; they match, so no symbol of the new libraries is missing from its file.
- Packaging metadata checked: Standards-Version 4.7.4 against Policy 4.7.4.1 (current), debhelper-compat 13, source format 3.0 (quilt), a superficial autopkgtest (debian/tests/build compiles and runs against the installed pkg-config files), gbp.conf, upstream/metadata, and two patches with DEP-3 headers. Build-Depends cover the new libraries' dependencies (libpng-dev, zlib1g-dev) and the GPU demo (libglew-dev, libglfw3-dev).
- Read every file under debian/ and the top-level source tree; upstream sources were covered directory by directory and by grep for licence and copyright wording rather than read line by line. debian/watch and .pc/ were left alone as instructed.
- uscan found upstream releases with
debian/watch; a newer upstream version is available (upstream15.0.0, packaged14.2.1+ds), which is not a fault of the package. - Every pointer of
debian/copyrightto /usr/share/common-licenses names a file that is there (Apache-2.0,CC0-1.0,GPL-2,GPL-3).
Not confirmed
- test/vector/data/fonts/2db082c6c462d5056544e56e7ea13bf58c33a832.ttf is a font subset recorded by record-test.sh (used by test/vector/data/tests/basic.tests for the Nastaliq test); no font stanza names it, so it falls under
Files: *and is recorded as MIT, but its source font and real licence are not documented in the tree and fonts were not opened. - test/fuzzing/clusterfuzz-testcase-minimized-hb-subset-fuzzer-6461128124465152 lies directly in test/fuzzing/, outside the
test/fuzzing/fonts/*stanza, soFiles: *(MIT) is the only stanza covering it; it is a minimized fuzz input derived from a font, and its provenance cannot be established from the tree. - Whether the fonts under test/shape/data/text-rendering-tests/fonts/ really are OFL-1.1 (the stanza applied at debian/copyright:68-88) or Apache-2.0 (the COPYING shipped in that directory) could not be settled without reading font metadata, which was not opened.
- No build or test was run; the missing -dev dependency and the man-page gap are visible from the packaging itself, and no build failure is claimed.
Proposed: debian/watch in version 5 format
debian/watch is in an old format. This is the conversion made by uscan --update-watchfile, which has not been run against the upstream site: some defaults differ in version 5, so test it with uscan --report before use.
