DFSG Assistant LLM REVIEW 2 blocker, 1 important, 1 minor
This is an LLM based review using a Debian Inference based workflow. It was not written by a member of the DFSG team and has not been checked by one. It is not a decision on the package: it may be wrong, and it may have missed things.

Report
DFSG NEW review for mplapack version 3.0.1+ds-1
Summary
- Licensing is DFSG-compliant and
debian/copyrightis accurate: No - Packaging is of good quality: No
- Issues: 2 blocker, 1 important, 1 minor
- debian/watch: version 5
- debian/copyright: machine-readable
- Scan before the review: nothing found
Licensing
All licences in the tree are DFSG-free (BSD-2, LAPACK-style BSD-3, FSF permissive, GPL-2+/GPL-3+ with Autoconf or Libtool exceptions), no non-free wording exists, and debian/copyright is DEP-5 with a correct Format, Files-Excluded matching the repack (the external/ tree holds only build stubs). But the file is inaccurate in three places: the 31 CUDA sources under mpblas/optimized/dd/cuda/ carry Copyright (c) 2010-2011 RIKEN, which the Files: mpblas/* mplapack/* stanza does not name; aclocal.m4 embeds pkg.m4, whose copyright holders (Scott James Remnant, Dan Nicholson) and licence (GPL-2+ with Autoconf exception) are not given by the stanza that describes it as FSF-unlimited; and ltmain.sh names Bootstrap Authors as a holder, which the ltmain stanza omits.
Packaging
The packaging is modern and careful otherwise: debhelper compat 14, autoconf buildsystem with an explicit minimal-backend configure line, hardened build, system GMP/MPFR/MPC/gmpfrxx instead of bundled copies, versioned SONAMEs matching the package name, shlibs via dh_makeshlibs, an autopkgtest compiling against both pkg-config modules, DEP-14 gbp.conf and salsa-ci. Standards-Version 4.7.4 is current against Policy 4.7.4.1. One defect must be fixed: libmplapack-mpfr-dev is declared Multi-Arch: same although it installs an architecture-specific generated header at an architecture-independent path, so it cannot be co-installed for two architectures; debian/README.source itself states the -dev package is not Multi-Arch: same.
Issues
blocker licensing 1. Files: mpblas/* does not name RIKEN, the copyright holder of 31 CUDA sources ◂
-
Files:
debian/copyright:37-41,mpblas/optimized/dd/cuda/Rgemm.cu:2-4,mpblas/optimized/dd/cuda/dd_real_cuda.h:2-4 -
Basis: checked, in the package or with a reference tool
-
Evidence:
mpblas/optimized/dd/cuda/Rgemm.cu:2(and the 29 other .cu files plusdd_real_cuda.h):Copyright (c) 2010-2011 RIKEN All rights reserved. The stanza that matches them,Files: mpblas/* mplapack/*, lists onlyMaho Nakata,The University of Tennessee and The University of Tennessee Research Foundation,The University of California Berkeley,The University of Colorado DenverandNAG Ltd. -
Problem: The files are matched by the
mpblas/*stanza, so their licence is right (BSD-2-Clause), but a copyright holder named in the file notices is missing fromdebian/copyright, which therefore misstates the copyright of 31 files. -
Fix: Add
2010-2011 RIKENto theCopyrightfield of thempblas/*stanza (or give these CUDA files their own stanza withLicense: BSD-2-Clause), keeping the licence unchanged.
blocker licensing 2. aclocal.m4 stanza gives FSF-unlimited and only FSF as holder, but the file embeds pkg.m4 under GPL-2+ with Autoconf exception (Scott James Remnant, Dan Nicholson) ◂
-
Files:
debian/copyright:96-105,aclocal.m4:22-49 -
Basis: checked, in the package or with a reference tool
-
Evidence:
aclocal.m4:26-30:dnl Copyright © 2004 Scott James Remnant <scott@netsplit.com>. dnl Copyright © 2012-2015 Dan Nicholson <dbn.lists@gmail.com> dnl ... dnl it under the terms of the GNU General Public License as published by dnl the Free Software Foundation; either version 2 of the License, orwhiledebian/copyrightsaysFiles: aclocal.m4 Makefile.in */Makefile.in/Copyright: 1992-2021 Free Software Foundation, Inc./License: FSF-unlimited. -
Problem: The stanza's last-match rule makes it cover all of
aclocal.m4, so the file is described with a single permissive licence and one holder, while roughly lines 22-49 of it are the GPL-2+pkg.m4macro set with the Autoconf exception, copyright Scott James Remnant and Dan Nicholson. Both the holder list and the licence short name are wrong for that part of the file, and the GPL text and exception it relies on are not reproduced or pointed to. -
Fix: Split the stanza: keep
aclocal.m4under FSF-unlimited for the automake part, and add aFiles: aclocal.m4stanza (placed after it) withCopyright: 2004 Scott James Remnant <scott@netsplit.com>and2012-2015 Dan Nicholson <dbn.lists@gmail.com>andLicense: GPL-2+ with Autoconf exception, reproducing the exception and pointing to/usr/share/common-licenses/GPL-2.
3. [important] [packaging] libmplapack-mpfr-dev is Multi-Arch: same but installs an architecture-specific header at /usr/include/mplapack/mplapack_config.h
-
Files:
debian/control:24-26,debian/libmplapack-mpfr-dev.install:1,debian/README.source:27-30 -
Basis: checked, in the package or with a reference tool
-
Evidence:
debian/controlfor the dev package:Architecture: any Multi-Arch: samewhiledebian/README.sourcesaysThe runtime package is Multi-Arch: same; the development package is not.andThe generated mplapack_config.h contains target configuration (including integer-width choices) and is installed under a common include path. configure.ac:2483-2492 setsmplapack_integer_bitsto 64 whensizeof(void*)is 8 and 32 otherwise, thenAC_DEFINE_UNQUOTED([MPLAPACK_INTEGER_TYPE], [$mplapack_integer_type]); Makefile.am:234 installs it asnodist_mplapack_include_HEADERS = include/mplapack_config.hunder$(includedir)/mplapack. -
Problem: Policy 5.6.34.3 requires that, for a given file name, every architecture of a
Multi-Arch: samepackage install the same bit-identical file.mplapack_config.his generated per architecture (mplapackint is int32_t on 32-bit and int64_t on 64-bit, plus HAVE_STD_FLOAT128, SIZEOF_VOID_P, binary80/128 mode macros) and installed at the architecture-independent path /usr/include/mplapack/mplapack_config.h, so dpkg will refuse to co-install the amd64 and i386 dev packages and the field is simply wrong. -
Fix: Remove
Multi-Arch: samefromlibmplapack-mpfr-devso that control matches README.source and policy, or move the generated header to an architecture-dependent include directory and install a wrapper header that includes it.
4. [minor] [licensing] ltmain.sh stanza does not name the holder Bootstrap Authors
- Files:
debian/copyright:117-120,ltmain.sh:75,ltmain.sh:1527 - Basis: checked, in the package or with a reference tool
- Evidence:
ltmain.sh:75:# Copyright (C) 2004-2019, 2021 Bootstrap Authors, andltmain.sh:1527:# Copyright (C) 2010-2019, 2021 Bootstrap Authors; the stanza names only1996-2019, 2021-2022 Free Software Foundation, Inc. - Problem: A holder named in the file's notices is absent from
debian/copyright. The licence itself (GPL-2+ with Libtool exception) is stated correctly, so only the holder line is wrong. - Fix: Add
2004-2019, 2021 Bootstrap Authors(and, if desired, the second 2010-2019 range) to theCopyrightfield of theFiles: ltmain.shstanza.
Verified
- Scan item
Bootstrap Authors(ltmain.sh:75, :1527): a copyright line of libtool's generated script; the file's licence is GPL-2+ with Libtool exception, whichdebian/copyrightstates correctly. Only the holder line is missing (issue above). - Scan items
Dan Nicholson <dbn.lists@gmail.com>(aclocal.m4:27) andScott James Remnant <scott@netsplit.com>(aclocal.m4:26): the embedded pkg.m4 block, GPL-2+ with Autoconf exception; misdescribed by the aclocal.m4 stanza (issue above). - Scan item
RIKEN(31 files: mpblas/optimized/dd/cuda/Rgemm.cu, Rgemm_cuda.cu, the 20 Rgemm_fermi_/Rgemm_tesla_ kernels, the 8 Rsyrk_* kernels, Rsyrk.cu and dd_real_cuda.h): each is BSD-2-Clause, copyright 2010-2011 RIKEN, contributed by Takao, Yasuyoshi and Nakata, Maho; they are CUDA sources not built by this package (--disable-cuda) but shipped as source. Holder missing from debian/copyright (issue above). - Licence inventory of the whole tree: no binary, PDF, image, font, archive or minified file exists; no vendored third-party tree exists either (external/ contains only Makefile.am/Makefile.in stubs and external/cmake/bootstrap.sh, so the Files-Excluded download/patches paths are really absent).
- Tree-wide search for non-free terms (non-commercial, no-modification, field-of-use, CC-*-NC/-ND, Good not Evil, Boost, ISC, zlib, public domain) found nothing but ordinary free-licence wording.
- Autotools files checked against their own headers and the stanzas that cover them: configure (FSFUL, years match), Makefile.in and aclocal.m4 header (FSF unlimited, 1996-2021/1994-2021), m4/libtool.m4, m4/ltoptions.m4, m4/ltsugar.m4, m4/ltversion.m4, m4/lt~obsolete.m4 (FSFULLR), compile/depcomp/missing/test-driver (GPL-2+ with Autoconf exception), config.guess/config.sub (GPL-3+ with Autoconf exception), install-sh (X11), INSTALL (FSFAP), ltmain.sh (GPL-2+ with Libtool exception), m4/host_cc_flags.m4 (MPLAPACK's own, no separate notice).
- MPLAPACK-authored header and source notices sampled across include/, mpblas/reference, mpblas/optimized/mpfr, mpblas/test, mplapack/reference, mplapack/test/matgen, benchmark/, examples/ are the two-clause BSD text with
Copyright (c) 2008-20xx Nakata, Maho, which theFiles: *stanza covers; include/blas.h and include/lapack.h are Nakata's own BSD-2 headers, not netlib copies. - All 61 occurrences of
University of Tennesseenotices are inside mpblas/ or mplapack/ (BLAS/LAPACK-derived routines), i.e. covered by theFiles: mpblas/* mplapack/*BSD-2-and-BSD-3 stanza; the three-clause text including the LAPACK patent disclaimer is reproduced there. Files say 1992-2007 where the stanza says 1992-2011 (year drift only). - debian/ read in full: control, rules, changelog, copyright, both .install files, .examples, not-installed, clean, tests/control, tests/mpfr-backend, tests/mpfr-backend.cpp, gbp.conf, salsa-ci.yml, README.source, source/format. No debian/patches and no maintainer scripts.
- Standards-Version 4.7.4 against the reviewing system's Policy 4.7.4.1: current. debhelper compat 14, so the absent ${shlibs:Depends}/${misc:Depends} in control is correct. Build-Depends on libgmpfrxx-mkii-dev (>= 1.5.0) is satisfiable: apt-cache shows gmpfrxx-mkii 1.5.0+ds-1, Multi-Arch: same, in the archive.
- Runtime package ships both SONAMEs (MPLAPACK_LT_VERSION_INFO 3:0:0 from configure.ac:29-32) under /usr/lib/, and debian/rules removes the upstream
-Wl,-rpath,$(libdir)from the two Makefiles that build the MPFR libraries (mplapack/reference/Makefile.am:50, mpblas/optimized/mpfr/Makefile.am:94), which is where dh_makeshlibs and the shlibs entries come from. - uscan found the packaged version as the newest upstream release (upstream
3.0.1, packaged3.0.1+ds). - Every pointer of
debian/copyrightto /usr/share/common-licenses names a file that is there (GPL-2,GPL-3).
Not confirmed
- The scan reported 7 text files larger than 4 MiB scanned only in their first 4 MiB; the read-only tools here give no file sizes, so I could not name them, but every file I found is text source or build input, and nothing in the tree looks like a built artefact.
- fable/ and fable/fem/ (about 60 .hpp files) carry no copyright or licence header at all and no licence file of their own; they are only covered by the
Files: *stanza claiming Nakata/BSD-2. Nothing in the tree documents their origin, so whether that attribution is right (fable is commonly a third-party library) could not be verified from the package.
Proposed changes
None.
