DFSG Assistant LLM REVIEW 0 blocker, 0 important, 5 minor
This is an LLM based review using a Debian Inference based workflow. It was not written by a member of the DFSG team and has not been checked by one. It is not a decision on the package: it may be wrong, and it may have missed things.

DFSG NEW review for mplapack version 3.0.1+ds-1
Summary
- Licensing is DFSG-compliant and
debian/copyrightis accurate: No - Packaging is of good quality: Yes
- Issues: 0 blocker, 0 important, 5 minor
- debian/watch: version 5
- debian/copyright: machine-readable
- Scan before the review: nothing found
Licensing
The licensing is DFSG-free: the MPLAPACK code is BSD-2-Clause, the BLAS/LAPACK-derived parts BSD-3-Clause (holders University of Tennessee / UTRF, UC Berkeley, University of Colorado Denver, NAG Ltd.), the RIKEN CUDA kernels BSD-2-Clause, and the autotools files FSF-unlimited, FSFAP, X11, MIT or GPL with the Autoconf/Libtool exceptions. No non-free terms are present and no built, binary or minified files are in the tree. debian/copyright is DEP-5 and covers every holder, but it is inaccurate for a large group of files: the ~500 example programs that declare themselves public domain are described as BSD-2-Clause with Maho Nakata as holder, and the mpblas/optimized/dd/cuda/* stanza swallows the automake Makefile.in there and describes it as RIKEN/BSD-2-Clause instead of FSF/FSF-unlimited. The example sources are also shipped without the templates and generator upstream's own README says they are generated from.
Packaging
The packaging is careful and well documented: compat 14 with the dh sequencer, hardening=+all, a three-way split (runtime, -dev, arch:all examples), Multi-Arch: same on the runtime package only with the reason recorded in README.source, the pkg-config and rpath adjustments explained and matched to the shipped templates, no symbols file with the reason given, an autopkgtest that compiles and runs against both installed pkg-config interfaces, Vcs-* fields, and a plausible initial-release changelog. Standards-Version 4.7.4 is current against Policy 4.7.4.1. Only minor points: three unused build dependencies, and an examples package whose shipped makefiles target libraries this source package does not build.
Issues
minor licensing 1. Files: * describes the ~500 public-domain example programs as BSD-2-Clause, copyright Maho Nakata ◂
- Files:
debian/copyright (Files: * stanza),examples/mpblas/Rgemm_double.cpp:1,examples/mplapack/00_GeneralLinearEquations/Cgesv_example_double.cpp:1,examples/mpblas/Makefile.linux.in:1 - Basis: checked, in the package or with a reference tool
- Evidence: examples/mplapack//*.cpp and examples/mpblas//*.cpp begin with
//public domain(the Makefile.template files with# public domain);grep 'public domain'matches 532 lines, all under examples/. debian/copyright's only stanza covering them isFiles: *withCopyright: 2008-2026 Maho NakataandLicense: BSD-2-Clause. - Problem: The licence and holder stated for these files are not what the files say. Public-domain dedication is DFSG-free, so nothing here blocks the package, but debian/copyright is inaccurate for a whole directory (copyright-format 6.7/7.1: each file's licence must be stated), and these files are the content of the libmplapack-mpfr-examples binary package.
- Fix: Add a
Files: examples/*stanza after the Files: * one withLicense: public-domainand a short text saying upstream dedicates them to the public domain in their first line; keep in a further stanza the examples files that do carry the MPLAPACK BSD-2 header, and drop the blanket Maho Nakata copyright claim for the public-domain ones.
minor licensing 2. The mpblas/optimized/dd/cuda/* stanza overrides the FSF Makefile.in stanza and misdescribes that generated Makefile ◂
- Files:
debian/copyright (Files: mpblas/optimized/dd/cuda/* stanza),mpblas/optimized/dd/cuda/Makefile.in:4 - Basis: checked, in the package or with a reference tool
- Evidence: debian/copyright has
Files: Makefile.in */Makefile.in(Copyright: 1992-2021 Free Software Foundation, Inc.,License: FSF-unlimited) earlier andFiles: mpblas/optimized/dd/cuda/*(Copyright: 2010-2011 RIKEN,License: BSD-2-Clause) later. mpblas/optimized/dd/cuda/Makefile.in begins# Copyright (C) 1994-2021 Free Software Foundation, Inc./# This Makefile.in is free software; the Free Software Foundation gives unlimited permission to copy and/or distribute it... - Problem: Where several stanzas match, the last applies (copyright-format 6.9), so this automake-generated Makefile is described with RIKEN's copyright and the BSD-2-Clause licence instead of FSF/FSF-unlimited. The .cu and .h files next to it are correctly covered by the RIKEN stanza.
- Fix: Narrow the cuda stanza to the files it is meant for (
mpblas/optimized/dd/cuda/*.cu,.../*.h) or add a laterFiles: mpblas/optimized/dd/cuda/Makefile.instanza with the FSF holder and FSF-unlimited.
minor licensing 3. Generated example sources ship without the generic/ templates and generate.sh they are generated from ◂
- Files:
examples/mplapack/README.md:34,examples/mplapack/README.md:42,examples/mplapack/generic/,examples/mplapack/00_GeneralLinearEquations/Cgesv_example_double.cpp - Basis: checked, in the package or with a reference tool
- Evidence: examples/mplapack/README.md: "Only files under
generic/are hand-maintained templates. Write a new*_generic.cpp..." and "Regenerate a category with: bash ../../generic/generate.sh"; also "Outsidegeneric/, category generated.cppfiles and per-category Makefiles are generated and should not be hand-edited." The tree contains no*_generic.cppand nogenerate.shanywhere (grep for both matches only this README); examples/mplapack/generic/ and examples/mpblas/generic/ hold only Makefile.linux.inteloneAPI.in. - Problem: For the ~500 generated example programs the package ships the outputs but not their generator input. They are complete, editable C++ source, so DFSG 2 is arguably met and this is not a blocker, but the preferred form for modification documented by upstream is missing and the instructions shipped in libmplapack-mpfr-examples cannot be followed.
- Fix: Ship the templates and the generator (repack, or ask upstream to add them to
make dist), or drop the paragraphs that tell users to regenerate, and note the omission in debian/README.source.
minor packaging 4. autoconf, automake and libtool are build dependencies nothing in the build uses ◂
- Files:
debian/control:8-10,debian/rules:7 - Basis: checked, in the package or with a reference tool
- Evidence:
Build-Depends: debhelper-compat (= 14), autoconf, automake, libtool, pkgconf, ...; debian/rules usesdh $@ --buildsystem=autoconf, and the debhelper autoconf buildsystem only runs the shipped./configure(no autoreconf;dh_autoreconfis not called). The tarball already shipsconfigure, everyMakefile.inandltmain.sh, and they are newer than configure.ac/Makefile.am. - Problem: Three declared build dependencies are never executed, adding build time and a needless chance of an installability problem. (python3 and pkgconf are used: configure AC_PATH_PROGs python3 and the make check rules run misc/summarize_mplapack_tests.py and the pkgconfig checks.)
- Fix: Drop autoconf, automake and libtool from Build-Depends; keep debhelper-compat, pkgconf, python3 and the library -dev packages.
minor packaging 5. The examples package ships makefiles that link against the six backends this source package does not build ◂
- Files:
debian/libmplapack-mpfr-examples.examples:1,examples/mpblas/Makefile.linux.in:24-38 - Basis: checked, in the package or with a reference tool
- Evidence: examples/mpblas/Makefile.linux.in sets
programs=Rgemm_mpfr Rgemm_gmp Rgemm_qd Rgemm_dd Rgemm_binary80 Rgemm_binary128 Rgemm_double ...andGMPLIBS=-lmplapack_gmp -lgmp,QDLIBS=-lmplapack_qd -lqd, etc.; the examples rule substitutes only %%MPLAPACKDIR%% and %%LIBQUADMATH%%. The only libraries this source package builds and installs are libmplapack_mpfr.so.3 and libmplapack_mpfr_opt.so.3. - Problem: In /usr/share/doc/libmplapack-mpfr-examples/examples, the documented
make -f Makefile.linuxcannot link: only the MPFR libraries exist. The package name says -mpfr, so users are misled into a failing build for the other six backends. - Fix: Ship only the MPFR example sources and targets, or state in the examples directory (or a README.Debian) that only the MPFR programs build against the packaged libraries.
Verified ◂
- debian/copyright is DEP-5 with the correct Format URL; it has 12 Files stanzas, Files-Excluded naming only paths that are gone from the tree (external//download/, external//patches/, external/distfiles.sha256; external/ now holds only Makefile.am/in files).
- Licence inventory: no SPDX-License-Identifier, Apache, MPL, LGPL or Affero text and no non-commercial/no-modification wording anywhere in the tree; the only licence families are BSD-2-Clause, the LAPACK BSD-3-Clause variant, FSF unlimited/FSFAP, X11/MIT and GPL-2+/GPL-3+ with the Autoconf or Libtool exception.
- copy mpblas/reference/Rgemm.cpp:1-33: Maho Nakata BSD-2 header plus
Derived from BLAS routine DGEMM; mplapack/reference/... files likewise stateDerived from LAPACKwith Univ. of Tennessee / UC Berkeley / Univ. of Colorado Denver / NAG Ltd. named - matching theFiles: mpblas/* mplapack/*stanza and the BLAS/LAPACK terms reproduced from COPYING. - mpblas/optimized/dd/cuda/Rgemm.cu:1-30 carries
Copyright (c) 2010-2011 RIKENwith the same BSD-2 terms, matching its stanza. - Autotools files match their stanzas: configure FSFUL, m4/libtool.m4 and friends FSFULLR, aclocal.m4 (with Scott James Remnant and Dan Nicholson for pkg.m4) FSF-unlimited plus GPL-2+ with Autoconf exception, compile/depcomp/missing/test-driver GPL-2+ with Autoconf exception, config.guess/config.sub GPL-3+ with Autoconf exception, ltmain.sh GPL-2+ with Libtool exception or MIT, install-sh X11, INSTALL FSFAP; all full texts are in debian/copyright and none of these files is part of a shipped binary.
- COPYING (BSD-2 for MPLAPACK, BSD-3 variant for BLAS/LAPACK) agrees with debian/copyright; the year 2008-2025 in COPYING against 2008-2026 in the copyright file is ordinary drift.
- The 3067-file tree was covered by the prescan's holder check (
every holder found is named in debian/copyright), which my greps for Copyright/(C)/(c) notices in mpblas/, mplapack/, include/, benchmark/, fable/, misc/, external/ and examples/ confirm: every notice names Maho Nakata, RIKEN, the LAPACK holders or the FSF. - No compiled, minified or container files: a glob over *.pdf, *.png, *.jpg, *.gif, *.svg, *.ttf, *.zip, *.gz, *.xz, *.tar, *.so, *.a, *.o, *.exe, *.dll, *.pyc, *.class, .bin, .dat, .npy found nothing. The only data files are small text matrices (examples/mplapack/**/Matrix_.txt) and LAPACK test inputs (.in), all covered by the mplapack/ stanza.
- The oversized files the scan could not read whole are automake output: mplapack/reference/Makefile.in (10.7 MB), mplapack/test/lin/Makefile.in (8.2 MB) and mplapack/test/eig/Makefile.in (4.1 MB) all begin with the standard
# Makefile.in generated by automake 1.16.5+ FSF copyright/FSF-unlimited header, and their Makefile.am/sources.am are in the tree; I read their headers and sampled their bodies rather than all of them. - fable/tbxx/.hpp and fable/fem/**/.hpp carry no copyright or licence header at all; they are covered by the
Files: *stanza and the package itself records no third-party provenance for them, so no holder is missing from the copyright file on the package's own evidence. - Packaging: debian/source/format 3.0 (quilt) with no patches (nothing to forward, no .pc content beyond quilt's bookkeeping); compat 14 via debhelper-compat, dh sequencer, hardening=+all, DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS-safe (no override_dh_auto_test that would need a nocheck guard).
- Dependencies are satisfiable: apt-cache shows libgmpfrxx-mkii-dev 1.5.0+ds-1 (Multi-Arch: same, libdevel), so
libgmpfrxx-mkii-dev (>= 1.5.0)in Build-Depends, Depends and autopkgtest Depends can be satisfied; libgmp-dev, libmpfr-dev, libmpc-dev and pkgconf are ordinary archive packages. - Relationship substvars are not needed in debian/control at compat 14 (dh_gencontrol adds them), and debian/tests/control is valid DEP-8 with the test's own build dependencies.
- The install files match what the build produces: runtime gets usr/lib//libmplapack_mpfr{,_opt}.so., -dev gets usr/include/mplapack, the two unversioned .so symlinks and usr/lib//pkgconfig/mplapack_mpfr.pc, and debian/not-installed covers the static archives, the .la files and upstream's
miscdir = $(prefix)/miscscripts (which would otherwise land in /usr/misc). - debian/rules' two exceptions are justified by the source: the .pc template cmake/mplapack.pc.cmake.in carries
Requires: mpc mpfr gmp(set by the Makefile.am rule for the mpfr modules) andRequires.private:is empty for them, so blanking Requires: and appending -lmpc -lmpfr -lgmp is coherent; --disable-optimization only suppresses upstream's -O2/-g munging (configure.ac:2604-2608), so both libraries are compiled with Debian's own flags. - changelog: 3.0.1+ds-1 to unstable, urgency=medium, initial release closing #1151369, date matching today; Vcs-Git/Vcs-Browser point at salsa and match the science-team layout; Standards-Version 4.7.4 has the current Policy's first two components (Policy 4.7.4.1).
- debian/README.source documents the repack, the MPFR-only build, the pkg-config and rpath rewriting, the Multi-Arch choice and the missing symbols file, and its claims match the files I read.
- uscan found the packaged version as the newest upstream release (upstream
3.0.1, packaged3.0.1+ds). - Every pointer of
debian/copyrightto /usr/share/common-licenses names a file that is there (GPL-2,GPL-3).
Not confirmed ◂
- Whether fable/tbxx and fable/fem are derived from cctbx's fable (Ralf W. Grosse-Kunstleve, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory): the files carry no notices and the package says nothing either way, so a missing attribution there could not be established from the package.
- Whether Debian's libmpc-dev ships mpc.pc (debian/README.source justifies the rewrite by Ubuntu's package); the rewrite works either way, but its necessity could not be checked with the tools available.
- The scan's seven files longer than 4 MiB could not all be identified: the three largest automake Makefile.in were found and read in part, the rest of each was not read.
- The executable bit on debian/tests/mpfr-backend (autopkgtest needs it executable) cannot be seen with read-only text access.
- The top-level README (23 bytes) refers to README.md, which is not in the tarball; whether that file is meant to be shipped cannot be checked without upstream's release.
