octave-mplapack 0.5.1-1

Package Information

Descriptionmultiple-precision linear algebra for GNU Octave

This Octave add-on provides native multiple-precision real and complex scalars and dense matrices, with selected BLAS and LAPACK operations backed by the MPLAPACK MPFR interface.

Its arithmetic uses the packaged MPFR and MPC backends and does not replace Octave's system BLAS or LAPACK.

DFSG Assistant LLM REVIEW 0 blocker, 0 important, 1 minor

This is an LLM based review using a Debian Inference based workflow. It was not written by a member of the DFSG team and has not been checked by one. It is not a decision on the package: it may be wrong, and it may have missed things.

Report◂

DFSG NEW review for octave-mplapack version 0.5.1-1

Summary

  • Licensing is DFSG-compliant and debian/copyright is accurate: Yes
  • Packaging is of good quality: Yes
  • Issues: 0 blocker, 0 important, 1 minor
  • debian/watch: version 5
  • debian/copyright: machine-readable
  • Scan before the review: nothing found

Licensing

Yes. The whole upstream tree is BSD-2-Clause: LICENSE and COPYING are the same BSD 2-Clause text with copyright 2026 MPLAPACK contributors, doc/mplapack-interop.texi states that the manual is under the BSD 2-Clause licence, and the C++ sources, m-files, tests and examples carry SPDX-License-Identifier: BSD-2-Clause. debian/copyright is valid machine-readable 1.0 with the correct Format: URI, a Files: * stanza and a Files: debian/* stanza, and the full licence text, and the author scan found no holder that it does not name. Nothing non-free, unlicensed or third-party is shipped; the tree contains no compiled, binary, image or font files, and the one generated file has its source in the package.

Packaging

Yes. The packaging is complete and conventional for an Octave add-on: debhelper compat 14 with dh-octave, DEP-5 copyright, a DEP-3 patch, an autopkgtest smoke test that loads the installed package, salsa-ci and gbp configuration, and a current Standards-Version. The one problem is external: the extension is compiled and linked against the MPLAPACK MPFR interface, and no package in Debian or in NEW provides libmplapack-mpfr-dev, so the source cannot be built in the archive until the MPLAPACK packages are accepted.

Issues

minor packaging 1. Build-Depends libmplapack-mpfr-dev exists nowhere in Debian and is not in NEW ◂
  • Files: debian/control (Build-Depends), src/mp_blas.h:6-8, src/mp_lapack.cc:12-13
  • Basis: checked, in the package or with a reference tool
  • Evidence: libmplapack-mpfr-dev, in Build-Depends; sources include #include <mplapack_mpfr.h>, #include <mpblas_mpfr.h> and #include <mplapack_config.h>; apt-cache: There is no binary package named libmplapack-mpfr-dev in these lists, and nothing provides it. Nor is it a binary of this package or of any upload waiting in the NEW queues (the list on ftp-master.debian.org as of 2026-11-08T09:03:20Z).
  • Problem: The extension is compiled and linked against the MPLAPACK MPFR headers and library, and nothing in Debian provides them (libmplapack-dev, libmplapack-mpfr1 and libmplapack-mpc-dev do not exist either), so the package cannot be built by an archive build daemon; ${shlibs:Depends} likewise has no libmplapack_mpfr library to resolve. The package documents this dependency as a separate, not yet packaged component.
  • Fix: Get the MPLAPACK MPFR packages (the runtime and libmplapack-mpfr-dev) through NEW and into the archive first, or hold this upload until they are available.
Verified ◂
  • The pre-review scan listed no files to account for: its only section was the author check, which scanned 994 files and reported every copyright holder found to be named in debian/copyright.
  • debian/copyright begins with the exact Format: https://www.debian.org/doc/packaging-manuals/copyright-format/1.0/; Files: * says Copyright: 2026 MPLAPACK contributors / License: BSD-2-Clause and Files: debian/* says Copyright: 2026 Maho NAKATA / License: BSD-2-Clause; the stand-alone BSD-2-Clause paragraph reproduces the text of LICENSE and COPYING, which are identical.
  • No copyright or other licence notice exists outside those files: case-insensitive greps of src/, inst/, test/, tools/, examples/ and doc/ for copyright, ©, (C) <year>, GPL/LGPL/Apache/MPL/MIT found nothing; doc/mplapack-interop.texi:11-13 has Copyright @copyright{} 2026 MPLAPACK contributors and says the manual is BSD-2-Clause; docs/ mentions GPL/LGPL only as the licences of the external GMP/MPFR/MPC dependencies (docs/binary-redistribution-licenses.md, docs/complex-architecture.md:173).
  • Sources carry SPDX-License-Identifier: BSD-2-Clause; sampled src/octave_bridge.cc:1, src/mp_blas.h, inst/@mp/mp.m:1, inst/fminbnd.m:1, inst/interp1.m:1, inst/mkpp.m:1, inst/private/mp_interp_make_pp.m:1, test/arithmetic.tst:1 and examples/svd_tiers/*.m; tools/check-format.sh:57 enforces the identifier for src/*.cc, src/*.h and test/*.cc.
  • No non-free wording anywhere: grep for non-commercial, no-modification, field-of-use, Good, not Evil, no-derivative and written-permission terms found nothing; All rights reserved. occurs only inside the BSD-2-Clause text in LICENSE, COPYING and debian/copyright.
  • No binary, compiled, image, font, PDF, archive or database file in the tree (glob for common extensions plus *.oct, *.o, *.so, *.mex, *.pdf, *.png returned nothing), and .pc/ is the only generated directory and was excluded.
  • docs/mplapack-interop.md is the only generated text; it is generated from doc/mplapack-interop.texi, which is shipped, and the README documents tools/build-manual-markdown.sh as its generator.
  • docs/codex/** JSON files (cases.json, verification-jobs.json, preparation/check-results.json, preparation/bundle-validation.json) are the project's NEIGT/SVT test data and result bundles, produced by the adjacent check_math.py and validate_bundle.py; they are not third-party material or built binaries.
  • Build dependencies that do exist in Debian: libgmpfrxx-mkii-dev 1.5.0+ds-1, pkgconf 2.5.1-4, debugedit 5.3-4, octave-dev 11.3.0-1+b1, dh-octave 1.18.1 (which provides dh-sequence-octave); dh-sequence-single-binary is provided by debhelper 14.5.
  • compat 14: dh_gencontrol adds the relationship substvars itself, so the absent Depends field is not a fault; dh_octave_substvars adds octave (>= 11.1.0) from DESCRIPTION and the octave-abi-N virtual package to ${shlibs:Depends}.
  • debian/rules uses --buildsystem=octave, whose build and test steps are empty and whose install step runs pkg install, which compiles src/; override_dh_strip carries out the debug-path rewrite before dh_strip, and is skipped by dh under nostrip at compat 13+.
  • debian/patches/series contains only reproducible-mkoctfile-debug-paths.patch, which has DEP-3 Description, Forwarded: not-needed, Author and Last-Update headers and applies to the shipped src/Makefile.
  • debian/tests/control runs debian/tests/smoke, which invokes octave-cli smoke.m with MPLAPACK_TEST_TMPDIR set to AUTOPKGTEST_TMP; the script loads the installed mplapack-interop package, checks arithmetic, solve, chol, qr, pivoted qr, lu, complex log2, eig, svd, the RNG and binary serialization, and restores the RNG state and precision in an unwind-protect block. No network, display or root access is needed.
  • debian/changelog is octave-mplapack (0.5.1-1) unstable, initial release closing #1151370, dated a Sunday; Standards-Version: 4.7.4 is current against Policy 4.7.4.1.
  • debian/source/format is 3.0 (quilt); debian/gbp.conf uses the DEP-14 debian/latest and upstream/latest branches with pristine-tar; debian/salsa-ci.yml includes the standard Debian recipe; the orig tarball contains no debian/ directory and its file list matches the unpacked tree apart from debian/ and .pc/.
  • uscan found the packaged version as the newest upstream release (upstream 0.5.1, packaged 0.5.1).
Not confirmed ◂
  • Whether an mplapack source or binary upload is queued somewhere not visible to the reviewing system; apt-cache checked the archive lists and the NEW queue as of 2026-11-08T09:03:20Z and found nothing.
  • Debian's /usr/bin/mkoctfile is a compiled binary that could not be inspected, so whether the compile step in the patched src/Makefile inherits dpkg-buildflags hardening flags through mkoctfile -p ALL_CXXFLAGS was not confirmed; only LDFLAGS from dpkg-buildflags are passed explicitly in debian/rules.
  • Large files were sampled, not read in full: src/octave_bridge.cc (about 372 KB), most of docs/, and the JSON case data under docs/codex/.
Proposed changes ◂

None.

Uploader's response to the LLM review

The mplapack source package has been recently accepted in unstable [1].
The libmplapack-mpfr-dev binary package does exist [2].
