Package Information

Descriptionsprite based side scrolling gaming engine

OpenBOR is a royalty free sprite-based side scrolling gaming engine. From humble beginnings in 2004, it has since grown into the most versatile, easy to use, and powerful engine of its type you will find anywhere.

OpenBOR is optimized for side scrolling beat em’ up style games (Double Dragon, Streets of Rage, Final Fight), but easily accommodates any sort of gameplay style and feature set you can imagine.

License: Frontier-Artistic-1.0
The Frontier Artistic License Version 1.0
Derived from the Artistic License at OpenSource.org.
Submitted to OpenSource.org for Open Source Initiative certification.
 .
 Preamble
 .
The intent of this document is to state the conditions under which a
Package may be copied, such that the Copyright Holder maintains some
semblance of artistic control over the development of the package,
while giving the users of the package the right to use and distribute
the Package in a more-or-less customary fashion, plus the right to
 make reasonable modifications.
 .
 Definitions
 .
"Package" refers to the script, suite, file, or collection of
scripts, suites, and/or files distributed by the Copyright Holder,
and to derivatives of that Package created through textual modification.
 .
"Standard Version" refers to such a Package if it has not been
modified, or has been modified in accordance with the wishes of
 the Copyright Holder.
 .
"Copyright Holder" is whoever is named in the copyright statement
 or statements for the package.
 .
"You" is you, if you're thinking about copying or distributing
 this Package.
 .
"Reasonable copying fee" is whatever you can justify on the basis
of media cost, duplication charges, time of people involved, and
so on. (You will not be required to justify it to the Copyright
Holder, but only to the computing community at large as a market
 that must bear the fee.)
 .
"Freely Available" means that no fee is charged for the item
itself, though there may be fees involved in handling the item.
It also means that recipients of the item may redistribute it under
the same conditions they received it.
 .
 Terms
 .
 1. You may make and give away verbatim copies of the source form of
the Standard Version of this Package without restriction, provided
that you duplicate all of the original copyright notices and
 associated disclaimers.
 .
 2. You may apply bug fixes, portability fixes, and other modifications
derived from the Public Domain or from the Copyright Holder. A Package
modified in such a way shall still be considered the Standard Version.
 .
 3. You may otherwise modify your copy of this Package in any way,
provided that you insert a prominent notice in each changed script,
suite, or file stating how and when you changed that script, suite,
or file, and provided that you do at least ONE of the following:
 .
 a) Use the modified Package only within your corporation or
organization, or retain the modified Package solely for personal use.
 .
 b) Place your modifications in the Public Domain or otherwise make
them Freely Available, such as by posting said modifications to Usenet
or an equivalent medium, or placing the modifications on a major archive
site such as ftp.uu.net, or by allowing the Copyright Holder to include
your modifications in the Standard Version of the Package.
 .
 c) Rename any non-standard executables so the names do not conflict
with standard executables, which must also be provided, and provide
a separate manual page (or equivalent) for each non-standard executable
that clearly documents how it differs from the Standard Version.
 .
 d) Make other distribution arrangements with the Copyright Holder.
 .
 4. You may distribute the programs of this Package in object code or
executable form, provided that you do at least ONE of the following:
 .
 a) Distribute a Standard Version of the executables and library
files, together with instructions (in the manual page or
equivalent) on where to get the Standard Version.
 .
 b) Accompany the distribution with the machine-readable source of
 the Package with your modifications.
 .
 c) Accompany any non-standard executables with their corresponding
Standard Version executables, give the non-standard executables
non-standard names, and clearly document the differences in manual
pages (or equivalent), together with instructions on where to get
 the Standard Version.
 .
 d) Make other distribution arrangements with the Copyright Holder.
 .
 5. You may charge a reasonable copying fee for any distribution of
this Package. You may charge any fee you choose for support of this
Package. You may not charge a fee for this Package itself. However,
you may distribute this Package in aggregate with other (possibly
commercial) programs as part of a larger (possibly commercial)
software distribution provided that you do not advertise this Package
as a product of your own.
 .
 6. The scripts and library files supplied as input to or produced as
output from the programs of this Package do not automatically fall
under the copyright of this Package, but belong to whomever generated
them, and may be sold commercially, and may be aggregated with this
 Package.
 .
 7. Scripts, suites, or programs supplied by you that depend on or
otherwise make use of this Package shall not be considered part of
 this Package.
 .
 8. The name of the Copyright Holder may not be used to endorse or
promote products derived from this software without specific prior
 written permission.

DFSG Assistant LLM REVIEW 3 blocker, 2 important, 3 minor

This is an LLM based review using a Debian Inference based workflow. It was not written by a member of the DFSG team and has not been checked by one. It is not a decision on the package: it may be wrong, and it may have missed things.

Reviewed 3 days ago.

Proposes a replacement debian/watch: debian/watch in version 5 format

Report◂

DFSG NEW review for openbor version 4.0~b7533+dfsg.1-1

Summary

  • Licensing is DFSG-compliant and debian/copyright is accurate: No
  • Packaging is of good quality: No
  • Issues: 3 blocker, 2 important, 3 minor
  • debian/watch: old format (version 4)
  • debian/copyright: machine-readable
  • Scan before the review: 3 found

Licensing

Most of the tree is BSD-3-clause with clearly attributed GPL-2+, Expat, ISC, zlib, libpng, SGI-B and public-domain parts, and the licence texts are present. But engine/source/gfxlib/2xSaImmx.asm is granted only for non-commercial use while debian/copyright calls it BSD-3-clause, and a prebuilt gradle-wrapper.jar is shipped with neither source nor a licence stanza. Several files' notices (public-domain stristr.c, Xiph in samplecvt.c, Khronos Expat code in SDL_egl.h, the unknown-author part of List.c, the unlicensed kbhit.*) are not reflected either.

Packaging

The packaging is conventional and mostly clean: compat 13 with Rules-Requires-Root: no, 3.0 (quilt), DEP-3 patches, correct amd64 build dependencies and a generated man page. But Debian patch 0003 introduces undefined behaviour in the out-of-memory log path (%size_t with a size_t argument), and the upstream Makefile strips the binary during the build so dh_strip can produce no useful debug symbols. Both should be fixed before upload.

Issues

1. [blocker] [licensing] engine/source/gfxlib/2xSaImmx.asm is non-commercial and not DFSG-free

  • Files: engine/source/gfxlib/2xSaImmx.asm:1-13
  • Basis: checked, in the package or with a reference tool
  • Evidence: ; * The following (piece of) code, (part of) the 2xSaI engine, copyright (c) 2001 by Derek Liauw Kie Fa. * Non-Commercial use of the engine is allowed and is encouraged, provided that appropriate credit be given ...
  • Problem: The only grant is for non-commercial use; commercial use is reserved by the copyright holder. That is a field-of-use restriction and violates DFSG 6. The package is a +dfsg repack, yet this file is shipped in the source. It also %includes macros.mac, which is GPL-2-only, so the file cannot legally be combined and distributed in any event.
  • Fix: Obtain a free licence from the author/upstream, or remove it: add engine/source/gfxlib/2xSaImmx.asm to Files-Excluded in debian/copyright, repack (e.g. +dfsg.2), and drop it from the Makefile/IDE project files (the amd64 build does not compile it anyway).

2. [blocker] [licensing] debian/copyright declares the non-commercial 2xSaImmx.asm to be BSD-3-clause

  • Files: debian/copyright:65-67
  • Basis: checked, in the package or with a reference tool
  • Evidence: Files: engine/source/gfxlib/2xSaImmx.asm / Copyright: 2001 Derek Liauw Kie Fa <DerekL666@yahoo.com> / License: BSD-3-clause
  • Problem: BSD-3-clause grants commercial use; the file's own notice restricts use to non-commercial. debian/copyright therefore misstates both the licence and the rights Debian has, which is an inaccurate copyright file.
  • Fix: After resolving the file's licensing, state its real licence in the stanza, or delete the stanza with the file.

3. [blocker] [licensing] Prebuilt gradle-wrapper.jar is shipped without source or a licence stanza

  • Files: engine/android/gradle/wrapper/gradle-wrapper.jar
  • Basis: checked, in the package or with a reference tool
  • Evidence: A Java archive is present in the tree (the only built file the scan found); the tree contains no Gradle wrapper Java sources and no Files: stanza covering it, so the catch-all Files: * claims it as OpenBOR's BSD-3-clause.
  • Problem: The preferred form for modification (DSFG 2) is not in the source package, and the archive's actual licence (Gradle/Apache-2.0) is not stated. Debian does not build the Android app, so the jar is dead weight for the binary build.
  • Fix: Delete the jar and exclude engine/android/gradle/ in the repack; if it is kept, ship its source and add a stanza naming the Gradle/Apache-2.0 holder and licence.

4. [important] [licensing] tools/borplay/source/kbhit.c and kbhit.h carry no licence grant

  • Files: tools/borplay/source/kbhit.c:1-3, tools/borplay/source/kbhit.h:1-3
  • Basis: inferred from what was read, not seen directly
  • Evidence: The whole header of both files is /*\nhttp://www.linux-sxs.org/programming/kbhit.html\n*/; there is no copyright or licence statement.
  • Problem: The files come from a web page with no stated licence, yet Files: * asserts BSD-3-clause for them. Without a grant from the author, the source package cannot be said to be free; a sponsor would require this clarified or removed.
  • Fix: Ask upstream for the provenance and licence, replace the snippet with a freshly written one, or remove it; then record the resulting licence in debian/copyright.

5. [important] [packaging] Patch 0003 introduces a broken format string (undefined behaviour)

  • Files: debian/patches/0003_fix_deprecated_functions.patch:18-20, engine/source/utils.c:307
  • Basis: checked, in the package or with a reference tool
  • Evidence: writeToLogFile("Memory usage at exit: %size_t\n", mallinfo2().arena);
  • Problem: writeToLogFile is a vfprintf wrapper. %size_t is parsed as the %s conversion followed by the literal ize_t, so vfprintf treats the size_t arena value as a char * and dereferences it: undefined behaviour, and a likely crash exactly while handling an out-of-memory error. The change was introduced by this Debian patch.
  • Fix: Use %zu for mallinfo2().arena (and in the dead #elif LINUX branch, whose %u is also wrong for a size_t).

6. [minor] [licensing] debian/copyright misses attribution for several files

  • Files: tools/borpak/source/stristr.c:1-19, tools/borplay/source/stristr.c:1-19, engine/source/webmlib/samplecvt.c:9-13, engine/android/app/jni/openbor/include/sdl/SDL_egl.h:28-38, engine/source/scriptlib/List.c:1-7
  • Basis: checked, in the package or with a reference tool
  • Evidence: Both stristr.c files say Hereby donated to public domain; samplecvt.c says Copyright (c) 2002-2015 Xiph.org Foundation; SDL_egl.h embeds Copyright (c) 2008-2009 The Khronos Group Inc. under the Expat text; List.c says 90% 2011 anallyst / 10% unknown author. None of these are named by the stanza that covers the file (Files: * BSD-3, the zlib-only sdl/* stanza, or the anallyst List* stanza).
  • Problem: DEP-5 requires each file to be matched by a stanza whose Copyright and License are accurate. These files are attributed to the wrong holder or licence, or to a single holder while the file itself records another (unknown) author.
  • Fix: Add a License: public-domain stanza for the two stristr.c files; credit Xiph for samplecvt.c; give SDL_egl.h a zlib-and-Expat stanza naming Khronos; and note the unknown-author portion of List.c (ideally raising it upstream).

7. [minor] [packaging] The upstream Makefile strips the binary at build time, so no debug symbols are produced

  • Files: engine/Makefile:242, engine/Makefile:725-728, debian/rules:33-35
  • Basis: checked, in the package or with a reference tool
  • Evidence: STRIP = $(LNXDEV)/$(PREFIX)strip $(TARGET) -o $(TARGET_FINAL) and $(TARGET_FINAL) : $(TARGET) runs @$(STRIP); BUILD_DEBUG is not set.
  • Problem: The installed /usr/games/OpenBOR is already stripped when dh_strip runs, so the generated dbgsym package contains no usable symbols and crash reports cannot be symbolized. Stripping is dpkg/debhelper's job, not the Makefile's.
  • Fix: Pass NO_STRIP=1 to dh_auto_build (the Makefile honours it) and let dh_strip/dh_buildinfo handle stripping and the dbgsym package.

8. [minor] [packaging] debian/watch is in the old version 4 format

  • Files: debian/watch
  • Basis: found by the review tooling's own checks
  • Evidence: version=4
  • Problem: Version 5 is the current format of debian/watch.
  • Fix: Convert it to version 5; a mechanical conversion is under Proposed changes.

Verified

  • Read every file in debian/: control, rules, changelog, copyright, clean, openbor.install, openbor.manpages, patches/series and all four patches, README.Debian, README.source, source/format, upstream/metadata, OpenBOR.6.xml, update-git-commit-hash.sh, git_commit_hash.txt.
  • Searched the whole tree (gitignore false, .pc/ excluded) for Copyright/(C)/©, SPDX identifiers and licence phrases, and for restrictive terms (non-commercial, no-modification, field-of-use and similar). The only restrictive wording is 2xSaImmx.asm:4.
  • Licence texts for BSD-3-clause, GPL-2.0, GPL-2.0+, GPL-3.0, LGPL-2.1+, LGPL-3.0+, Apache-2.0, ISC, Expat, zlib/libpng, libpng-2.0, SGI FreeB and Frontier Artistic are present; the GPL/LGPL/Apache ones use /usr/share/common-licenses. BSD-3, Expat, ISC, zlib, libpng, SGI-B, Artistic and GPL/LGPL parts are compatible with the GPL-2+ object code that hq2x.c makes the binary.
  • gradle-wrapper.jar is the only prebuilt file; media/_DUMMY is a 1-byte placeholder for the otherwise empty media/ directory, not built or installed, so there is nothing to licence in it.
  • Files-Excluded was checked against the tree: no .exe/.dll/.7z/.chm/.a/.so/.o/.obj/.pak files, no engine/xbox/common/ and no 2xsaiwin.* remain.
  • The amd64 build sets BUILD_LINUX=1 with GCC_TARGET=x86_64-linux-gnu; the Makefile sets BUILD_MMX only in the 32-bit branch, so 2xSaImmx.o is not linked into the amd64 binary (the non-free file is nevertheless shipped in the source package, which is what the DFSG finding is about).
  • Copyright-holder scan reported ALL SOURCE AUTHORS LISTED; spot-checking the dated notices in the tree against debian/copyright found only the gaps listed above.
  • dh-exec's installed dh-exec-install script handles DH_EXEC_SOURCE ending in manpages and supports the source => target form, so debian/openbor.manpages is correct; libvorbisfile needs no extra Build-Depends (libvorbis-dev ships it), and dh-exec, docbook-xsl, xsltproc, libsdl2-gfx-dev, libvpx-dev are all in Build-Depends.
  • Read debian/copyright in full; it is DEP-5 with Format: https://www.debian.org/doc/packaging-manuals/copyright-format/1.0/, so no replacement is proposed. Standards-Version 4.7.4 matches the reviewing system's Policy 4.7.4.1.
  • uscan found the packaged version as the newest upstream release (upstream 4.0~b7533, packaged 4.0~b7533+dfsg.1).
  • Every pointer of debian/copyright to /usr/share/common-licenses names a file that is there (Apache-2.0, GPL-2, GPL-3, LGPL-2.1, LGPL-3).

Not confirmed

  • Whether the man-page build resolves the DocBook 4.5 DTD: xsltproc runs with --nonet and docbook-xml is only Recommended by docbook-xsl, not in Build-Depends. A build would show whether the XML catalog supplies it.
  • Whether engine/source/gfxlib/2xSaI.c (the C 2xSaI/Super2xSaI/SuperEagle implementation) also derives from Derek Liauw Kie Fa's non-commercial code; its header is only OpenBOR's BSD notice and gives no credit. If it does, it is a second non-free file.
  • Whether dpkg-buildflags hardening reaches the binary: the upstream Makefile uses its own CFLAGS and debian/rules does not export the flags, but Debian's compiler defaults may still provide some of them; a build with blhc would show.
  • Whether the kbhit.* snippet at linux-sxs.org has a licence; no network access was available.

Proposed: debian/watch in version 5 format

debian/watch is in an old format. This is the conversion made by uscan --update-watchfile, which has not been run against the upstream site: some defaults differ in version 5, so test it with uscan --report before use.
