Review: openbor 4.0~b7533+dfsg.1-1
Package Information
| Description | sprite based side scrolling gaming engine OpenBOR is a royalty free sprite-based side scrolling gaming engine. From humble beginnings in 2004, it has since grown into the most versatile, easy to use, and powerful engine of its type you will find anywhere. OpenBOR is optimized for side scrolling beat em’ up style games (Double Dragon, Streets of Rage, Final Fight), but easily accommodates any sort of gameplay style and feature set you can imagine. |

License: Frontier-Artistic-1.0
The Frontier Artistic License Version 1.0
Derived from the Artistic License at OpenSource.org.
Submitted to OpenSource.org for Open Source Initiative certification.
.
Preamble
.
The intent of this document is to state the conditions under which a
Package may be copied, such that the Copyright Holder maintains some
semblance of artistic control over the development of the package,
while giving the users of the package the right to use and distribute
the Package in a more-or-less customary fashion, plus the right to
make reasonable modifications.
.
Definitions
.
"Package" refers to the script, suite, file, or collection of
scripts, suites, and/or files distributed by the Copyright Holder,
and to derivatives of that Package created through textual modification.
.
"Standard Version" refers to such a Package if it has not been
modified, or has been modified in accordance with the wishes of
the Copyright Holder.
.
"Copyright Holder" is whoever is named in the copyright statement
or statements for the package.
.
"You" is you, if you're thinking about copying or distributing
this Package.
.
"Reasonable copying fee" is whatever you can justify on the basis
of media cost, duplication charges, time of people involved, and
so on. (You will not be required to justify it to the Copyright
Holder, but only to the computing community at large as a market
that must bear the fee.)
.
"Freely Available" means that no fee is charged for the item
itself, though there may be fees involved in handling the item.
It also means that recipients of the item may redistribute it under
the same conditions they received it.
.
Terms
.
1. You may make and give away verbatim copies of the source form of
the Standard Version of this Package without restriction, provided
that you duplicate all of the original copyright notices and
associated disclaimers.
.
2. You may apply bug fixes, portability fixes, and other modifications
derived from the Public Domain or from the Copyright Holder. A Package
modified in such a way shall still be considered the Standard Version.
.
3. You may otherwise modify your copy of this Package in any way,
provided that you insert a prominent notice in each changed script,
suite, or file stating how and when you changed that script, suite,
or file, and provided that you do at least ONE of the following:
.
a) Use the modified Package only within your corporation or
organization, or retain the modified Package solely for personal use.
.
b) Place your modifications in the Public Domain or otherwise make
them Freely Available, such as by posting said modifications to Usenet
or an equivalent medium, or placing the modifications on a major archive
site such as ftp.uu.net, or by allowing the Copyright Holder to include
your modifications in the Standard Version of the Package.
.
c) Rename any non-standard executables so the names do not conflict
with standard executables, which must also be provided, and provide
a separate manual page (or equivalent) for each non-standard executable
that clearly documents how it differs from the Standard Version.
.
d) Make other distribution arrangements with the Copyright Holder.
.
4. You may distribute the programs of this Package in object code or
executable form, provided that you do at least ONE of the following:
.
a) Distribute a Standard Version of the executables and library
files, together with instructions (in the manual page or
equivalent) on where to get the Standard Version.
.
b) Accompany the distribution with the machine-readable source of
the Package with your modifications.
.
c) Accompany any non-standard executables with their corresponding
Standard Version executables, give the non-standard executables
non-standard names, and clearly document the differences in manual
pages (or equivalent), together with instructions on where to get
the Standard Version.
.
d) Make other distribution arrangements with the Copyright Holder.
.
5. You may charge a reasonable copying fee for any distribution of
this Package. You may charge any fee you choose for support of this
Package. You may not charge a fee for this Package itself. However,
you may distribute this Package in aggregate with other (possibly
commercial) programs as part of a larger (possibly commercial)
software distribution provided that you do not advertise this Package
as a product of your own.
.
6. The scripts and library files supplied as input to or produced as
output from the programs of this Package do not automatically fall
under the copyright of this Package, but belong to whomever generated
them, and may be sold commercially, and may be aggregated with this
Package.
.
7. Scripts, suites, or programs supplied by you that depend on or
otherwise make use of this Package shall not be considered part of
this Package.
.
8. The name of the Copyright Holder may not be used to endorse or
promote products derived from this software without specific prior
written permission.

This is an LLM based review using a Debian Inference based workflow. It was not written by a member of the DFSG team and has not been checked by one. It is not a decision on the package: it may be wrong, and it may have missed things.

Report
DFSG NEW review for openbor version 4.0~b7533+dfsg.1-1
Summary
- Licensing is DFSG-compliant and
debian/copyrightis accurate: No - Packaging is of good quality: Yes
- Issues: 1 blocker, 1 important, 1 minor
- debian/watch: version 5
- debian/copyright: machine-readable
- Scan before the review: 1 found
Licensing
Every licence found in the tree is free and the licences of the code that actually goes into the amd64 binary (BSD-3-clause, zlib, ISC, Expat, GPL-2+) are compatible; because engine/source/gfxlib/hq2x.c is GPL-2+, the binary as a whole is GPL-2+. debian/copyright, however, does not describe the tree accurately: engine/source/gfxlib/hq2x16mmx.asm is GPL-2-or-later by MaxSt but falls under the BSD-3-clause Files: * catch-all, which also fails to name MaxSt at all, and the Expat licence it claims for the Stella-derived engine/xbox/generic/SndXBOX.* files is not supported by anything in the source. A smaller inconsistency is tools/borplay/source/stristr.c, which is public domain but left under Files: * while the identical tools/borpak/source/stristr.c is correctly declared PUBLIC-DOMAIN.
Packaging
The packaging is of good quality. It uses debhelper compat 13 with the dh sequencer, builds only the Linux target of the upstream Makefile against the system SDL2/libsdl2-gfx/libpng/libvorbis/libvpx, passes NO_STRIP=1 so dh_strip owns stripping, registers every generated file (version.h, meta.xml, Info.plist, openbor.6, version001.txt) in debian/clean, ships the patches with DEP-3 headers, generates and installs a section-6 man page, and its Build-Depends all resolve (libsdl2-dev pulls pkgconf, which the Makefile's pkg-config sdl2 --cflags needs). Architecture: amd64 matches what the build can actually do; the changelog and README.source are sane. I found nothing that a sponsor would need fixed.
Issues
blocker licensing 1. engine/source/gfxlib/hq2x16mmx.asm is GPL-2+ by MaxSt, but no stanza names it and Files: * declares it BSD-3-clause ◂

;Copyright (C) 2003 MaxSt ( maxst@hiend3d.com )...;as published by the Free Software Foundation; either / ;version 2 of the License, or (at your option) any later / ;version.-- debian/copyright, catch-all:Files: */Copyright: 2003 Roel van Mastbergen & Senile Team2004-2019 OpenBOR Team/License: BSD-3-clause -
Problem: No Files stanza matches this file, so the catch-all applies and tells the world it is BSD-3-clause held by Senile Team/OpenBOR Team. It is actually GPL-2-or-later, and
MaxStappears nowhere in debian/copyright. A redistributor relying on debian/copyright would get the licence and the holder wrong, which is exactly what copyright-format 1.0 (Policy 12.5) requires the file to get right. It is the only GPL file in the tree that no stanza covers; hq2x.c, interp.h, macros.mac and the xbox/tools files all have their own stanzas. The file is assembled only for 32-bit/MMX builds, so the amd64 binary is unaffected, but the source is shipped and must be described correctly. -
Fix:
Add a stanza after
Files: *, for example:Files: engine/source/gfxlib/hq2x16mmx.asm
Copyright: 2003 MaxSt ( maxst@hiend3d.com )
License: GPL-2.0+(GPL-2.0+ is already defined as a stand-alone paragraph, so no new licence text is needed.)
important licensing 2. debian/copyright claims Expat for engine/xbox/generic/SndXBOX.*, which carry no permission notice and point to a missing "license" file ◂
- Files:
engine/xbox/generic/SndXBOX.cxx:11-14,engine/xbox/generic/SndXBOX.hxx:11-14 - Basis: inferred from what was read, not seen directly
- Evidence:
// Copyright (c) 1995-1998 by Bradford W. Mott/// See the file "license" for information on usage and redistribution of/// this file, and for a DISCLAIMER OF ALL WARRANTIES.-- and debian/copyright:Files: engine/xbox/generic/SndXBOX.*/Copyright: 1995-1998 Bradford W. Mott/License: Expat - Problem: The two files are Stella sources (the file header is Stella's) and contain no Expat/MIT permission text anywhere; the only reference is to a
licensefile that is not in the tree (the only licence files shipped are ./LICENSE, engine/LICENSE, tools/LICENSE, tools/7-Zip/license.txt and engine/source/webmlib/nestegg/LICENSE). Upstream Stella is GPL-2-or-later, so the Expat short name in debian/copyright cannot be justified from the package. The files are source-only (the Xbox port is not built), but debian/copyright has to state their real licence. - Fix: Change the stanza to the licence that actually applies (GPL-2.0+ for Bradford W. Mott's Stella code), or, if the Xbox port did receive a permissive grant, obtain and ship that grant and quote it in debian/copyright. Excluding the two files with a Files-Excluded entry would also be acceptable since nothing in the Debian build needs them.
minor licensing 3. tools/borplay/source/stristr.c is public domain but falls under Files: * as BSD-3-clause ◂
- Files:
tools/borplay/source/stristr.c:17,debian/copyright:145-148 - Basis: checked, in the package or with a reference tool
- Evidence:
** Hereby donated to public domain.in both tools/borpak/source/stristr.c and tools/borplay/source/stristr.c; debian/copyright declares onlyFiles: tools/borpak/source/stristr.c...License: PUBLIC-DOMAIN, leaving the borplay copy to the catch-all's BSD-3-clause. - Problem: The two files are the same Bob Stout/Greg Thayer/Fred Cole code, but the copyright file assigns them different licences. Public-domain code cannot be relicensed by a third party as BSD-3-clause, so the declaration is inaccurate for tools/borplay/source/stristr.c.
- Fix: Extend the existing stanza to
Files: tools/borpak/source/stristr.c/tools/borplay/source/stristr.cwithLicense: PUBLIC-DOMAIN.
Verified ◂
- Read debian/copyright in full (583 lines): it is DEP-5 with the correct Format URL, a
Files: *catch-all plus about 35 specific stanzas, and a stand-alone License paragraph for every short name used (BSD-3-clause, Apache-2.0, zlib/libpng, Expat, SGI-Free-Software-License-B, libpng-2.0, GPL-2.0+, GPL-2.0, GPL-3.0, LGPL-2.1+, LGPL-3.0+, ISC, BSD-3-Clause-UCB, BSD-like-Erik-Corry, Frontier-Artistic-1.0, PUBLIC-DOMAIN). Every /usr/share/common-licenses pointer names a file that exists (GPL-2, GPL-3, LGPL-2.1, LGPL-3, Apache-2.0). - media/_DUMMY (the one file the scan flagged as unknown binary) is a 1-byte placeholder that keeps the empty media/ directory in the tarball; it contains no code or data of value, is not installed, and raises no licensing question.
- Prescan holders
possibly named under a similar nameare all named in matching stanzas: Xiph.Org Foundation (include/ogg/, include/tremor/, vorbisfpu.h, samplecvt.c, yuv.c), Bryan Cain (tools/borplay, tools/makepkg), Glenn Randers-Pehrson (include/png/), Alex Pankratov (webmlib/halloc/), Mark Martinec (engine/symbian/vsnprintf.h). - Tree-wide sweep for
Copyright,(C),GNU General Public License,GNU Lesser,Permission is hereby granted,Permission to use, copy,Redistribution and use in source,Apache,BSD,public domain,Xiph,Mozilla,ISC: the GPL/LGPL files are exactly hq2x.c, hq2x16mmx.asm, interp.h, macros.mac, engine/xbox/generic/{iosupport.,panel.h,scale2x.cpp,simple2x.cpp}, tools/borpak/{borpak.c,stristr.h}, tools/borplay/{ao.h,os_types.h,borplay.c,mylibaow32.c,stristr.h}, tools/makepkg/ (GPL-3.0) and tools/7-Zip/license.txt (LGPL-2.1+); all are named in debian/copyright except hq2x16mmx.asm (reported). - engine/source/gfxlib/hq2x.c and interp.h carry Andrea Mazzoleni's GPL-2+ text (plus a MAME linking exception that adds no restriction) and are declared GPL-2.0+; macros.mac is ZSNES GPL-2.0-only and declared GPL-2.0. Only hq2x16mmx.asm includes macros.mac.
- tools/borpak/source/scandir.c (GPL-2+, viewmol), engine/wii/sblaster.c (BSD-3, Francisco Munoz), engine/source/webmlib/yuv.c (SDL/Xiph/UCB/Erik Corry/Brown notices) and engine/source/webmlib/nestegg/LICENSE (ISC, Mozilla) match their stanzas.
- No file of any type listed in Files-Excluded remains in the tree: no *.exe, *.dll, *.a, *.so, *.o, *.obj, *.jar, *.7z, .pak or .chm anywhere, no engine/source/gfxlib/2xSaImmx.asm, no engine/xbox/generic/2xsaiwin., no engine/xbox/common/, no borplay kbhit.. tools/7-Zip/ holds only license.txt and readme.txt, whose LGPL-2.1+ stanza is correct.
- All images are OpenBOR project art under the catch-all: engine/resources/.png/.gif/.ico/.icns (menu and icon sets), engine/android/app/src/main/res/**/.png launcher icons, engine/symbian/opensource.svg and the uiq3 .bmp icons; none carries or refers to a third-party notice. engine/resources/.h are generated from the adjacent PNGs by engine/resources/makeheader.pl, which is shipped.
- The vendored trees under engine/android/app/jni/openbor/include (SDL2, libpng, ogg, tremor, libvpx) are source-only headers for the Android build; they are covered by their own stanzas, the Debian build uses the system libraries, and the prebuilt Android libraries were removed from the +dfsg tarball (only README.md remain).
- All licences are DFSG-free and compatible in the one binary that is built: the amd64 build compiles hq2x.o (GPL-2+) along with BSD-3/zlib/ISC code, so the resulting work is GPL-2+, which is unproblematic since the source is in the same package. No field-of-use, non-commercial or no-modification terms were found anywhere.
- Read every file of debian/: control, rules, changelog, source/format (3.0 (quilt)), openbor.install, openbor.manpages (dh-exec rename), clean, README.Debian, README.source, update-git-commit-hash.sh, OpenBOR.6.xml, upstream/metadata, and all four patches with series.
- Build-Depends resolve: docbook-xsl 1.79.2+dfsg-8 and libsdl2-gfx-dev 1.0.4+dfsg-8 exist, libsdl2-dev depends on pkgconf (for the Makefile's
pkg-config sdl2 --cflags), and libpng-dev pulls zlib1g-dev for -lz; the Makefile links -lvorbisfile/-lvorbis (libvorbis-dev) and -lvpx (libvpx-dev). - Standards-Version 4.7.4 against Policy 4.7.4.1: same first two components, so not an issue. Changelog
4.0~b7533+dfsg.1-1, distribution unstable, closing the ITP, signed by the Maintainer field. - debhelper compat 13 with
dh $@: the CFLAGS/LDFLAGS/CPPFLAGS from dpkg-buildflags are exported by dh (Dh_Lib::setup_buildenv) and the upstream Makefile'sCFLAGS +=lines extend them; ${misc:Depends} and ${shlibs:Depends} are spelled out.Architecture: amd64is consistent with the Makefile, which selects TARGET_ARCH=amd64/-m64 for any GCC_TARGET containing 64 and would need yasm plus the excluded 2xSaImmx.asm for 32-bit MMX builds. - There is no debian/tests directory, so no autopkgtest is shipped; Policy does not require one and this is not reported as a defect. The man page build (
openbor.6: debian/OpenBOR.6.xml) runs before dh_installman and the result is removed by debian/clean. - uscan found the packaged version as the newest upstream release (upstream
4.0~b7533, packaged4.0~b7533+dfsg.1). - Every pointer of
debian/copyrightto /usr/share/common-licenses names a file that is there (Apache-2.0,GPL-2,GPL-3,LGPL-2.1,LGPL-3).
Not confirmed ◂
- The Makefile's link rule uses
$(CC) $(CFLAGS) -o ... $(LIBS)and never $(LDFLAGS), so dpkg-buildflags' linker hardening flags (-Wl,-z,relro/-z,now) may not reach the link and the binary may lack full RELRO/BIND_NOW. I could not build or inspect the binary to confirm; a build andreadelf -l/the lintian hardening tags would settle it. The fix, if needed, is a patch adding $(LDFLAGS) to the link rule. - engine/source/tracelib2/tracelib2.c says
license to use and redistribute is granted under the same terms as OpenBOR itself. as long as anallyst is granted to use and redistribute the OpenBOR source code, and maintain his own fork.debian/copyright calls it BSD-3-clause. I read this as BSD-3 with a condition about a third party's continued rights rather than a restriction on the licensee, but the wording could be read as a conditional grant and I did not find anything that settles it. - I could not confirm on this system that docbook-xsl ships /usr/share/sgml/docbook/stylesheet/xsl/docbook-xsl/manpages/docbook.xsl (docbook-xsl is not installed here; the path comes from dh_make's template), so the man page build itself was not verified. The package is assumed to build.
