php-mongodb-mongodb 2.5.0-1

Package Information

Description${phpcomposer:description}

This library provides a high-level abstraction around the lower-level PHP driver (mongodb extension).

This library implements a full-featured API similar to that of other MongoDB drivers. It contains abstractions for client, database, and collection objects, and provides methods for CRUD operations and common commands (e.g. index and collection management).

DFSG Assistant LLM REVIEW 0 blocker, 1 important, 0 minor

This is an LLM based review using a Debian Inference based workflow. It was not written by a member of the DFSG team and has not been checked by one. It is not a decision on the package: it may be wrong, and it may have missed things.

Report◂

DFSG NEW review for php-mongodb-mongodb version 2.5.0-1

Summary

  • Licensing is DFSG-compliant and debian/copyright is accurate: No
  • Packaging is of good quality: Yes
  • Issues: 0 blocker, 1 important, 0 minor
  • debian/watch: version 5
  • debian/copyright: machine-readable
  • Scan before the review: nothing found

Licensing

Every upstream file is under Apache-2.0 by MongoDB, Inc., which is DFSG-free and correctly reflected by the single Files: * stanza; the upstream LICENSE is the unmodified Apache-2.0 text, there is no NOTICE, and no vendored third-party code or differently-licensed file exists in the tree. debian/copyright is nevertheless inaccurate: its Files: * stanza covers debian/ too, so it attributes the Debian packaging and the three Debian patches (David Prévot's work) to MongoDB, Inc., and no stanza states the packaging's own copyright or licence.

Packaging

Competent pkg-php-tools packaging: debhelper compat 14 with dh-sequence-phpcomposer, Standards-Version: 4.7.4 (current against Policy 4.7.4.1), correct composer-derived substvars, Multi-Arch: foreign on an Architecture: all library, an autopkgtest whose Test-Command exercises the installed library, and three well-formed patches with clear purposes. The generated autoloaders, debian/clean, debian/install and debian/autoloaders/debian/overrides mappings are consistent, and the changelog is a sane initial 2.5.0-1 entry.

Issues

important licensing 1. Files: * claims the Debian packaging and patches are Copyright MongoDB, Inc., with no Files: debian/* stanza ◂
  • Files: debian/copyright:6-9, debian/patches/0001-Drop-composer-runtime-api-dependency.patch:1-4, debian/patches/0002-Compatibility-with-recent-PHPUnit-13.patch:1-4, debian/patches/0003-Skip-tests-requiring-an-actual-MongoDB-server.patch:1-4, debian/changelog:5

  • Basis: checked, in the package or with a reference tool

  • Evidence:

    debian/copyright has only:

    Files: *
    Copyright: 2015-present MongoDB, Inc.
    License: Apache-2.0
On Debian systems, the full text of the Apache License version 2
     can be found in `/usr/share/common-licenses/Apache-2.0'.

while the packaging is not MongoDB's: debian/changelog:5 ends -- David Prévot <taffit@debian.org> Thu, 05 Nov 2026 ... and all three patches start From: =?utf-8?q?David_Pr=C3=A9vot?= <david@tilapin.org> with Date: Thu, 5 Nov 2026.

  • Problem: In copyright-format 1.0 a Files pattern of * matches every file in the source package at any depth, debian/ included (copyright-format 6.9), so the stanza asserts that debian/rules, debian/control, debian/install, debian/clean, debian/tests/control, the autoloaders/overrides files and the three patches are the copyrighted work of MongoDB, Inc. licensed under Apache-2.0. Those files are David Prévot's, so the file does not accurately describe the copyright of every file in the source, which is what Policy 12.5 requires of it.

  • Fix: Add a stanza after Files: *, e.g. Files: debian/* with Copyright: 2026 David Prévot <taffit@debian.org> and the licence he intends for the packaging (Apache-2.0 is the natural choice here), so that the catch-all no longer claims the Debian work.

Verified ◂
  • The prescan (/review-input/prescan.md) listed no files to account for and found no copyright holder missing from debian/copyright; I confirmed that by re-running the holder and licence searches myself.
  • debian/copyright read in full: DEP-5, correct Format: URL, one Files: * stanza, Copyright: 2015-present MongoDB, Inc., License: Apache-2.0 pointing at /usr/share/common-licenses/Apache-2.0 (the file exists), no Files-Excluded.
  • Licence sweep over the whole tree (1164 files; .pc/ and debian/cargo-checksum.json passed over): the only licence text found is Apache-2.0. All PHP headers found (101 files) read Copyright <year>-present MongoDB, Inc. / Licensed under the Apache License, Version 2.0; a search for BSD/MIT/ISC/CC/GNU/SPDX/public domain/All rights reserved and for SSPL, non-commercial, no-modification or field-of-use wording produced no hits (the apparent MIT hits were the substring in commit/submit).
  • Only licence-bearing file is the top-level LICENSE, the complete unmodified Apache-2.0 text; there is no NOTICE/COPYING/AUTHORS and no per-directory licence file.
  • No vendored third-party code: .evergreen/, .github/, benchmark/, examples/, generator/, src/, stubs/, tests/, tools/ and the Markdown docs are all MongoDB's own repository content under the above LICENSE, so no separate stanza is required for them.
  • sbom.json is a CycloneDX 1.5 metadata file naming the composer/cyclonedx build tools that produced it; it contains no bundled code and no licence claim about the package.
  • tests/drivers-evergreen-tools, tests/specifications and generator/mql-specifications are the empty checkouts of the .gitmodules submodules (a git-export tarball does not carry submodule content); nothing from them is shipped, so nothing needs a copyright stanza, though the spec-test fixtures are consequently absent.
  • src/Builder is 373 files whose header says THIS FILE IS AUTO-GENERATED. ANY CHANGES WILL BE LOST!; the generator that produces them is shipped in generator/ (free, Apache-2.0, and referenced by .github/workflows/generator.yml), which reads its definitions from the empty generator/mql-specifications submodule, so the tree cannot be regenerated as-is even though the shipped PHP is the modifiable source.
  • No binary, image, font, minified, PDF or other built artifact exists in the tree, matching the prescan's empty findings.
  • debian/ read in full except debian/watch (out of scope): control, rules, changelog, copyright, install, clean, examples, gbp.conf, README.source, source/format (3.0 quilt), tests/control, upstream/metadata, autoloaders/php-mongodb-mongodb, overrides/php-mongodb-mongodb and all three patches with patches/series.
  • Standards-Version: 4.7.4 against the reviewing system's Policy 4.7.4.1: current enough, not an issue.
  • Dependencies exist and satisfy the composer constraints: php-mongodb 2.5.5-1, php-symfony-polyfill-php84/-php85 1.43.3-1, phpab 1.29.4-2, phpunit 13.4.5+ds-1, pkg-php-tools 1.50 (which provides phpabtpl), checked with the apt-cache tool; php-mongodb-mongodb is this upload's own binary.
  • debhelper compat 14: ${misc:Depends} and ${phpcomposer:...} are added by dh_gencontrol itself, so their layout (and the absence of ${shlibs:Depends}) is correct, and dh skips the override_dh_auto_test target under DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS=nocheck, so that override need not check nocheck; the <!nocheck> markers on php-mongodb, php-psr-log and phpunit are therefore consistent with the test wrapper.
  • debian/tests/control conforms to the autopkgtest specification: Test-Command may stand alone without Tests:, Depends: ..., @ is right, and rw-build-tree is needed because the command writes vendor/ and debian/autoload.tests.php.tpl, both of which debian/clean removes.
  • Patches: 0001 removes only the composer-runtime-api requirement (Debian does not use composer's runtime API), 0002 only adapts PHPUnit API usage (isType/containsOnly to isString/isArray/isObject/containsOnlyString) and adds the data-provider parameters the providers already yield, 0003 skips the server-dependent functional tests and deletes the GridFS and unified-spec runners; 0002 and 0003 apply in series cleanly because 0002 modifies files 0003 then deletes.
  • debian/install, debian/autoloaders and debian/overrides agree with each other: src/* goes to /usr/share/php/MongoDB and the autoloader mapping names MongoDB/autoload.php; debian/clean removes every file the build generates (src/autoload.php, vendor/, both phpab templates, .phpunit.result.cache).
  • Changelog is a single, well-formed initial 2.5.0-1 entry for a new source package, dated and signed by the Uploader; no bug closures are claimed.
  • uscan found the packaged version as the newest upstream release (upstream 2.5.0, packaged 2.5.0).
  • Every pointer of debian/copyright to /usr/share/common-licenses names a file that is there (Apache-2.0).
Not confirmed ◂
  • I could not run the build or the autopkgtest, so I did not confirm that the patched test suite passes; the skip patch and the missing specification fixtures suggest the run exercises only the server-independent unit tests.
  • pkg-php-tools is not installed on the reviewing system, so I could not read dh_phpcomposer or phpabtpl and verify the ${phpcomposer:Debian-require}/-provide/-replace/-conflict/-suggest substvar names, the phpabtpl --basedir src composer.json and --require-file ../src/autoload.php invocation, or the debian/autoloaders/debian/overrides line formats; the .dsc's rendered Testsuite-Triggers is consistent with the control file, and the maintainer's upload would not build otherwise.
  • Whether the auto-generated src/Builder classes still match what generator/ would produce cannot be checked here, because the generator's definition input is the empty generator/mql-specifications submodule.
Proposed changes ◂

None.
