Review: qt6-pim 6.12.0~beta1+dfsg-4
Package Information
| Description | Qt PIM module, Contacts library Qt is a cross-platform C++ application framework. Qt's primary feature is its rich set of widgets that provide standard GUI functionality. This package contains Qt PIM module's Contacts library. WARNING: This module is not an official part of Qt 6, but instead a git snapshot of an ongoing development. The package is very likely to change in a binary incompatible way, and no guarantees are given. |

DFSG Assistant LLM REVIEW 0 blocker, 0 important, 6 minor
This is an LLM based review using a Debian Inference based workflow. It was not written by a member of the DFSG team and has not been checked by one. It is not a decision on the package: it may be wrong, and it may have missed things.

DFSG NEW review for qt6-pim version 6.12.0~beta1+dfsg-4
Summary
- Licensing is DFSG-compliant and
debian/copyrightis accurate: Yes - Packaging is of good quality: Yes
- Issues: 0 blocker, 0 important, 6 minor
- debian/watch: version 5
- debian/copyright: machine-readable
- Scan before the review: 6 found
Licensing
The licensing is DFSG-free throughout. Every non-debian file carries an SPDX header and is under Qt's LGPL-3.0-only/GPL-2.0-only/GPL-3.0-only (src), GPL-3.0-only (test code), BSD-3-Clause (examples, doc snippets, every CMakeLists) or GFDL-1.3-no-invariants (qdoc), in each case with the Qt commercial option; all licences are in /usr/share/common-licenses or reproduced in debian/copyright, and they are mutually compatible. The only CC-BY-SA asset (tests/system/qmlorganizer/contents/images/default.svg) and doc/src are gone from the tree as Files-Excluded says, every holder named in a file is named in debian/copyright, and no file lacks a licence. One small inaccuracy remains: two Files stanzas match build files whose own headers declare BSD-3-Clause (issue below).
Packaging
Good, conventional Qt 6 packaging: debhelper compat 13 with plain dh, hardening=+all, pkgkde_symbolshelper, build-system-correct dependencies, hardening of the test run under xvfb with the right <!nocheck> annotations, proper Multi-Arch and Section per binary package, Breaks/Replaces and Provides for the renamed packages, and docs built, moved and deduplicated in rules. Standards-Version 4.7.4 is current. The defects found are minor: dead Qt 5 symbols files, two unused Qt 5 QML build-dependencies, missing Qt 6 -dev dependencies on the -dev packages whose headers need them, one patch without a DEP-3 header, and a wrong examples synopsis.
Issues
minor licensing 1. Files: tests/* and Files: * give a licence different from the one the build files themselves declare ◂
- Files:
debian/copyright:18-22,debian/copyright:35-37,debian/copyright:8-10,tests/CMakeLists.txt:2,.cmake.conf,.tag,dependencies.yaml,licenseRule.json:13-22 - Basis: checked, in the package or with a reference tool
- Evidence:
Files: CMakeLists.txt / */CMakeLists.txt / coin/*...License: BSD-3-clause(lines 18-22) is followed byFiles: tests/*...License: Qt-Commercial or GPL-3(lines 35-37); every one of the 70 CMakeLists under tests/ starts# SPDX-License-Identifier: BSD-3-Clause(tests/CMakeLists.txt:2). licenseRule.json, cited by the copyright file itself, puts.cmake.conf,.tagand.yamlin the build-system rule with"spdx": ["BSD-3-Clause"], butFiles: *(lines 8-10) gives themLicense: Qt-Commercial or LGPL-3 or GPL-2 or GPL-3. - Problem: Under copyright-format 1.0 section 6.9 the last matching stanza wins, so the file states GPL-3 for the 70 tests CMakeLists and LGPL-3/GPL-2/GPL-3 for .cmake.conf, .tag and dependencies.yaml, where the files' own headers and the package's own licence rule say BSD-3-Clause. Both licences are free, so this is not a DFSG problem, but debian/copyright does not describe those files correctly.
- Fix: Add a
Files: tests/*/CMakeLists.txt(or move the existing CMakeLists stanza belowFiles: tests/*) withLicense: BSD-3-clause, and a stanzaFiles: .cmake.conf .tag dependencies.yamlwithLicense: BSD-3-clause.
minor packaging 2. Five libqt5*.symbols files are dead weight: no libqt5 package is built any more ◂
- Files:
debian/libqt5contacts5a.symbols,debian/libqt5organizer5a.symbols,debian/libqt5versit5a.symbols,debian/libqt5versitorganizer5a.symbols,debian/rules:19-21 - Basis: checked, in the package or with a reference tool
- Evidence: debian/control builds only libqt6contacts6, libqt6organizer6, libqt6versit6 and libqt6versitorganizer6; the changelog of 6.12.0~beta1+dfsg-1 says "Drop lintian-overrides for various libqt5*5a packages now that SONAMEs match again", yet the four Qt 5 .symbols files (about 206 KB) are still in debian/.
execute_after_dh_auto_cleanalso runsrm -f plugins/*/*.soandrm -f qml/*/*.so, for top-level directories that do not exist in the tree. - Problem: Nothing reads these files: dh (via pkg-kde-tools' pkgkde_symbolshelper) only looks for debian/.symbols for packages that are actually built, so the files are inert source bloat and mislead a later maintainer into thinking the Qt 5 packages still exist. The Qt 6 libraries, by contrast, ship no symbols file at all, so DPKG_GENSYMBOLS_CHECK_LEVEL=1 and the symbols helper check nothing.
- Fix: Delete the four libqt5*.symbols files and the two stale rm lines from debian/rules; if ABI tracking is wanted for the Qt 6 libraries, add real debian/libqt6*.symbols files instead.
minor packaging 3. Build-Depends on the Qt 5 QML modules qml-module-qtquick2 and qml-module-qttest, which a Qt 6 build cannot use ◂
- Files:
debian/control:11-12 - Basis: checked, in the package or with a reference tool
- Evidence:
qml-module-qtquick2,/qml-module-qttest,in Build-Depends; apt-cache: qml-module-qttest is5.15.19+dfsg-2 ... Qt 5 test QML module, whileqt6-declarative-dev ... Depends: ... qml6-module-qtquick ..., qml6-module-qttestalready brings the Qt 6 modules the qml tests import. - Problem: The Qt 5 QML modules cannot be loaded by the Qt 6 qmltestrunner and the tests do not use them, so the two build-dependencies only pull Qt 5 into the build chroot; they are leftovers of the Qt 5 era packaging.
- Fix: Drop qml-module-qtquick2 and qml-module-qttest from Build-Depends.
minor packaging 4. qt6-pim-dev and qt6-pim-private-dev do not depend on the Qt 6 -dev packages their headers and CMake files require ◂
- Files:
debian/control (qt6-pim-dev and qt6-pim-private-dev, Depends),debian/qt6-pim-dev.install,debian/qt6-pim-private-dev.install,src/contacts/qcontactmanager_p.h:23 - Basis: checked, in the package or with a reference tool
- Evidence: qt6-pim-private-dev installs
usr/include/*/qt6/Qt*/6.*/Qt*/private/*_p.h, and src/contacts/qcontactmanager_p.h:23 is#include <QtCore/private/qobject_p.h>; the public headers include<QtCore/...>(qcontact.h:8-11) and the Qtdeclarative_contacts headers include<QtQml/qqml.h>(src/imports/contacts/qdeclarativecontact_p.h:19). In the archive, qt6-charts-dev, qt6-3d-dev, qt6-lottie-dev and qt6-quick3d-dev all haveqt6-base-devin Depends, and qt6-declarative-private-dev hasqt6-base-private-dev. qt6-pim-dev depends only on its own four libraries. - Problem: A consumer that installs qt6-pim-dev (or -private-dev) and nothing else cannot compile against it: QtCore/QtQml headers and the Qt6Core/Qt6Qml CMake configs the shipped Qt6*Config.cmake files need are not there. The private headers additionally need Qt's private headers, which only qt6-base-private-dev provides.
- Fix: Add qt6-base-dev and qt6-declarative-dev to qt6-pim-dev's Depends, and qt6-base-private-dev and qt6-declarative-private-dev to qt6-pim-private-dev's.
minor packaging 5. 1005-override-qtversion.patch has no DEP-3 header and lowers the reported module version to 6.10.0 for a 6.12.0~beta1 tree ◂
- Files:
debian/patches/1005-override-qtversion.patch:1-8,.cmake.conf:1 - Basis: checked, in the package or with a reference tool
- Evidence: The patch is a bare diff with no Description/Origin/Forwarded:
-set(QT_REPO_MODULE_VERSION "6.12.0")/+set(QT_REPO_MODULE_VERSION "6.10.0"), while the package is 6.12.0beta1+dfsg-4 and Build-Depends requirebeta1+dfsg-1 ("lower Qt version requirement down to 6.10").qt6-base-dev (>= 6.10.2+dfsg~). Its purpose is only explained in the changelog of 6.12.0 - Problem: Without a DEP-3 header the patch's intent is invisible to anyone reading debian/patches. The change also makes the installed Qt module report 6.10.0 (header directories, Qt6ConfigVersion.cmake) although the source and the package are 6.12.0~beta1, so
find_package(Qt6 6.11 ... COMPONENTS Contacts)fails even though the package version satisfies it. - Fix: Add Description, Origin (and Forwarded if applicable) lines, as the other patches in the series have or as 0034-0039 do, and keep the module version at or just below the newest qt6-base in the archive rather than a whole minor version below.
minor packaging 6. qt6-pim-examples synopsis calls the C++/QML examples 'HTML examples' ◂
- Files:
debian/control:221 - Basis: checked, in the package or with a reference tool
- Evidence:
Description: Qt 6 PIM HTML examplesfor a package that ships binaries under usr/lib/*/qt6/examples/organizer/ and QML sources under /usr/share/doc/qt6-pim-examples/examples/; the HTML documentation is in qt6-pim-doc-html (Description: Qt 6 PIM HTML documentation). - Problem: The synopsis is a copy-and-paste of the doc-html package's one and is wrong about what the package contains, which every user sees in apt/dpkg output.
- Fix: Use
Description: Qt 6 PIM examples.
Verified ◂
- Licence inventory over the whole non-debian tree:
LicenseRef-Qt-Commercial OR LGPL-3.0-only OR GPL-2.0-only OR GPL-3.0-onlyin src/,... OR GPL-3.0-onlyin tests/ code,... OR BSD-3-Clausein examples/ and in the examples' and snippets' .qdoc files, bareBSD-3-Clausein the 88 CMakeLists, and... OR GFDL-1.3-no-invariants-onlyin src//doc/src/.qdoc; all are on the prescan's accepted list and mutually compatible. - No non-free terms anywhere: no CC-*-NC/ND, no 'no modification', no 'non-commercial' wording, no commercial-only SPDX expression, and no 'All rights reserved' except the HTML footer string at doc/qt5.qdocconf:85 (a 2012 Nokia notice, whose holder the
Files: doc/*stanza names). - The six files the prescan listed as unrecognised binary data - tests/auto/versit/qversit/testdata_vcf/AAB4-MultipleAll.vcf, AAB4-SingleNonAscii.vcf, AAB4-SingleNonAsciiWithPhoto.vcf, Entourage11-basic.vcf, Entourage11-image.vcf and Entourage11-nonascii.vcf - are vCard test data: they are the data rows of tests/auto/versit/qversit/tst_qversit.cpp:140-190, and their embedded photo/base64 payloads are why the scanner saw binary content. They are not built files and are covered by the tests/* stanza.
- Files-Excluded is honoured: there is no doc/src and no tests/system/qmlorganizer/contents/images/default.svg in the tree, and no QML or C++ file references default.svg.
- Images, recorded by name and judged by location: examples/contacts/qmlcontactslistview/doc/images/qmlcontactslistview-{edit,main}.png, examples/organizer/qmlorganizerlistview/doc/images/qmlorganizerlistview-{edit,main,new}.png, examples/organizer/todo/doc/images/todo{editor,example}.png, src/organizer/doc/images/qmlorganizerlistview-main.png and src/imports/contacts/default.svg are documentation screenshots and a QML icon under the examples/* and src/* stanzas; tests/system/qmlorganizer/contents/images/{button,button-pressed,gloss,lineedit,quit,stripes,titlebar,toolbutton,spinner-bg,spinner-select}.png and the three .sci files are the UI assets of the QML system test under the tests/* stanza. None carries its own notice.
- LICENSE.* and LICENSES/.txt are licence texts, not licensed code. src/imports//declarative_*_qmltyperegistrations.cpp are generated files, but they are checked in upstream and built from the checked-in CMakeLists (NO_GENERATE_QMLTYPES), so no source is missing.
- doc/ contains only legacy qdocconf and style files; the documentation is built from the src//doc/.qdocconf added by 1004-qdoc.patch, so the excluded top-level doc/src is not needed for what is shipped. The only report of the excluded data is doc/qt5.qdocconf's
sourcedirs += ../doc/src, in a qdocconf the build does not use. - debian/: DEP-5 with the exact 1.0 Format URL; 18 patches, all listed in series and all present; debhelper compat 13 with plain dh, DEB_BUILD_MAINT_OPTIONS=hardening=+all and dpkg-buildflags; xauth/xvfb marked <!nocheck>, correct because at compat 13 dh skips override_dh_auto_test under nocheck;
dh_auto_test -- LC_ALL=... QML2_IMPORT_PATH=...is the working idiom because cmake's test step runsmake testwith those words as make variable assignments (Buildsystem/makefile.pmtest), which make exports to ctest. - The renamed packages have Breaks/Replaces and (for the dev package) Provides on the qtpim6-* names, and the bound
6.12.0~beta+dfsg-4~does cover the released 6.12.0~beta1+dfsg-3: deb-version(7) compares the non-digit part first, where the digit '1' counts as the empty part, so~beta+dfsgsorts above~beta1+dfsg. - Standards-Version 4.7.4 matches the current Policy 4.7.x. No maintainer scripts, maintscripts or debian/tests (there is no autopkgtest; the test suite runs at build time under xvfb-run).
- uscan found the packaged version as the newest upstream release (upstream
6.12.0~beta1, packaged6.12.0~beta1+dfsg). - Every pointer of
debian/copyrightto /usr/share/common-licenses names a file that is there (GFDL-1.3,GPL-2,GPL-3,LGPL-2.1,LGPL-3).
Not confirmed ◂
- Whether
usr/lib/*/cmake/Qt6Qmlandusr/lib/*/cmake/Qt6BuildInternalsin qt6-pim-dev.install would share any file name with qt6-declarative-dev/qt6-base-dev: dpkg allows a directory owned by several packages, only identical file names clash, and that can only be seen from an actual build tree. - The provenance of the PNG/SCI assets under tests/system/qmlorganizer/contents/images/: they carry no notice or attribution file, and the same directory also held default.svg, which the changelog describes as CC-BY-SA. Their location assigns them to the tests/* stanza; whether they are all Qt-authored could not be checked without the upstream history.
- Why doc/src was removed through Files-Excluded: the changelog records only the removal of default.svg, and the removed files are not available to inspect.
- I could not test whether
-DQT_BUILD_DOCS=ONin a clean arch-only build, where qt6-documentation-tools (Build-Depends-Indep) is absent, makes cmake fail rather than warn; a build would show it. The package's presence in unstable suggests Qt skips the docs instead.
