Review: ruby-cucumber-query 16.1.1-1

Package Information

DescriptionCucumber query module

The different message types in cucumber-messages have references to each other using id fields. It's a bit similar to rows in a relational database, with primary and foreign keys.

DFSG Assistant LLM REVIEW 0 blocker, 1 important, 0 minor

This is an LLM based review using a Debian Inference based workflow. It was not written by a member of the DFSG team and has not been checked by one. It is not a decision on the package: it may be wrong, and it may have missed things.

DFSG NEW review for ruby-cucumber-query version 16.1.1-1

Summary

  • Licensing is DFSG-compliant and debian/copyright is accurate: Yes
  • Packaging is of good quality: No
  • Issues: 0 blocker, 1 important, 0 minor
  • debian/watch: version 5
  • debian/copyright: machine-readable
  • Scan before the review: nothing found

Licensing

debian/copyright is DEP-5, and its Files: * stanza (Expat) covers every upstream file: LICENSE (MIT text, holder 2020 Cucumber Ltd and contributors), VERSION, the gem2tgz-generated cucumber-query.gemspec, and the two files under lib/cucumber/. No other copyright notices exist in the tree, and the standalone License: Expat text reproduces the MIT permission notice. The debian/* stanza names the packager and uses the same licence, which matches the Comment:. Expat is DFSG-free and nothing in the tree restricts modification or distribution.

Packaging

The packaging is small and otherwise clean: compat 14 with a standard dh_ruby rules file, correct Architecture: all, Testsuite: autopkgtest-pkg-ruby, valid Vcs-* and upstream metadata, a sane changelog, and debhelper substvars need not be named at compat 14. One problem keeps it from being buildable and installable against the archive: the versioned build dependency on ruby-cucumber-messages (>= 34.1) cannot be satisfied, because the archive's only ruby-cucumber-messages is 32.2.0-2 (also below the gemspec's runtime requirement, from which the binary's Depends is generated).

Issues

important packaging 1. Build-Depends on ruby-cucumber-messages (>= 34.1) cannot be satisfied in the archive ◂
  • Files: debian/control:7, cucumber-query.gemspec:31
  • Basis: checked, in the package or with a reference tool
  • Evidence: debian/control: ruby-cucumber-messages (>= 34.1); apt-cache show ruby-cucumber-messages: Version: 32.2.0-2 (the only version listed, in unstable/experimental; no NEW-queue candidate was found); cucumber-query.gemspec: s.add_runtime_dependency(%q<cucumber-messages>.freeze, [">= 34.1".freeze, "< 36".freeze])
  • Problem: The build dependency's version constraint is not satisfiable by any ruby-cucumber-messages in Debian, so a source build in the archive (sbuild, reproducible builds) fails at dependency installation. The same requirement is in the gemspec, so the generated binary Depends would also be uninstallable once built. This is not a DFSG or copyright problem but a sponsor would require the dependency chain to be in place before uploading.
  • Fix: Upload or wait for ruby-cucumber-messages >= 34.1 (a 34.x/35.x upstream release) to be accepted first, then this package can build; alternatively confirm with upstream that cucumber-query 16.1.1 can be relaxed to the 32.2.0 in the archive, which its gemspec currently forbids.
Verified ◂
  • Read all of debian/ in full: control, rules, changelog, copyright, watch (not reviewed), gbp.conf, salsa-ci.yml, source/format, upstream/metadata.
  • DEP-5 format is correct; Files: * precedes and is overridden for debian/*; both stanzas use Expat and the standalone Expat text matches LICENSE verbatim.
  • Copyright evidence in the whole tree is confined to LICENSE:3 (Copyright (c) 2020 Cucumber Ltd and contributors), which debian/copyright names; the pre-scan found no missing holders.
  • All five upstream files were read or listed: LICENSE, VERSION (16.1.1), cucumber-query.gemspec (auto-generated by gem2tgz from the gem metadata), and lib/cucumber/query.rb, lib/cucumber/repository.rb; none carries its own notice or embedded third-party code.
  • No binaries, minified files, archives, PDFs or other non-source artefacts are in the tree; .pc/ was ignored as instructed, and the orig tarball contains only cucumber-query.gemspec, lib/, LICENSE, VERSION.
  • Standards-Version: 4.7.4 against Policy 4.7.4.1 (first two components match; not an issue); compat 14 is current; gem2deb 2.2.10 satisfies gem2deb (>= 2.2.8~); Ruby 3.3 in the archive satisfies the gemspec's >= 3.3.
  • Changelog version 16.1.1-1, unstable, date Sat, 17 Oct 2026 consistent; initial release with no bug closure needed; Section: ruby, Architecture: all, Homepage, Vcs-Git/Vcs-Browser and debian/upstream/metadata field names are valid.
  • debian/rules is the standard dh_ruby template (--buildsystem=ruby --with ruby, --gem-install); there are no patches and hence no DEP-3 header issue.
  • uscan found the packaged version as the newest upstream release (upstream 16.1.1, packaged 16.1.1).
Not confirmed ◂
  • gem2deb-test-runner is not installed on the reviewing system and has no manual page, so I could not inspect what GEM2DEB_TEST_RUNNER = --check-dependencies verifies for a source tree with no test suite; the archive's package lists may postdate a newer ruby-cucumber-messages upload, but the apt-cache tool also searches ftp-master's NEW queue and found none.
Proposed changes ◂

None.
