DFSG Assistant LLM REVIEW 1 blocker, 0 important, 0 minor
This is an LLM based review using a Debian Inference based workflow. It was not written by a member of the DFSG team and has not been checked by one. It is not a decision on the package: it may be wrong, and it may have missed things.

Report
DFSG NEW review for rust-ruby-prism version 2.1.0-1
Summary
- Licensing is DFSG-compliant and
debian/copyrightis accurate: No - Packaging is of good quality: Yes
- Issues: 1 blocker, 0 important, 0 minor
- debian/watch: version 5
- debian/copyright: machine-readable
- Scan before the review: nothing found
Licensing
The tree is entirely MIT/Expat, which is DFSG-free, and debian/copyright is in DEP-5 format with the full Expat text. It is not accurate, though: the Files: * stanza names Ruby developers as the copyright holder, while the upstream ruby/prism repository this crate is built from (the crate sits at rust/ruby-prism in it) is copyright Shopify Inc., as Debian's own ruby-prism package of the same upstream records.
Packaging
Standard debcargo 2.8.4 output: compat 13 with dh-sequence-cargo, correct Build-Depends-Arch/Depends split (consumers need the crate's build-dependencies), <!nocheck> markers, one autogenerated and correctly applied feature-removal patch, three autopkgtests, Standards-Version 4.7.4 against Policy 4.7.4.1, and a well-formed changelog. No packaging fault worth reporting.
Issues
blocker
licensing
1. Files: * names Ruby developers instead of the upstream holder Shopify Inc., and omits the Cargo.toml authors
◂
- Files:
debian/copyright:10-12,Cargo.toml:9-13,.cargo_vcs_info.json - Basis: checked, in the package or with a reference tool
- Evidence:
Copyright: 2022-present, Ruby developers; Cargo.toml gives the authors as Steve Loveless, Ian Ker-Seymer and Kevin Newton, and debian/copyright.debcargo.hint (the debcargo-generated draft) lists those three; .cargo_vcs_info.json has"path_in_vcs": "rust/ruby-prism", so the crate is part of https://github.com/ruby/prism, for which the Debian ruby-prism 2.1.0-1 package recordsCopyright: 2022-2026 Shopify Inc.(/usr/share/doc/ruby-prism/copyright). - Problem: The copyright statement does not name the entity upstream's licence notice names.
Ruby developersappears nowhere in the source or its licence, and the crate's own authors were dropped rather than resolved; an inaccurate Copyright field is a licensing error under Policy 12.5 / copyright-format 6.5, since the notice that must be reproduced with the Expat permission is upstream's. - Fix: Use the upstream notice, e.g.
Copyright: 2022-2026, Shopify Inc.in the Files: * stanza, adding named holders only if there is evidence for them (the hint's three authors are Cargo.toml authors, not necessarily holders).
Verified ◂
- Read all 13 upstream files: Cargo.toml, Cargo.toml.orig, Cargo.lock, .cargo_vcs_info.json, build.rs, src/lib.rs, src/node.rs, src/node_ext.rs, src/string_query.rs, src/parse_result/{mod,comments,diagnostics}.rs and vendor/prism-2.1.0/config.json. None carries its own copyright or licence header; the crate declares
license = "MIT"and the only licence evidence is Expat, matching debian/copyright'sLicense: Expatstanza and its complete permission/no-warranty text. - vendor/prism-2.1.0/config.json is the JSON node/flag/error-code configuration that build.rs opens (
vendor/prism-<CARGO_PKG_VERSION>/config.json, build.rs:104-107) to generate bindings.rs at build time; it is upstream source data, not a built artifact, and the code generator that consumes it is in the package. - The prescan's author check found no holder in the tree that debian/copyright omits; the inaccuracy is the opposite one, the holder it names (see issue).
- Only Expat is involved, so the licences in the binary are compatible; debian/* is under Expat too, and the full licence text is included, so no pointer to /usr/share/common-licenses is required (its current form is correct either way).
- Packaging files read in full: control, rules, changelog, debcargo.toml, copyright.debcargo.hint, source/format (3.0 quilt), patches/series and patches/auto/auto-remove-features.patch, tests/control, upstream/metadata. The single patch is debcargo's autogenerated feature removal (default
vendoreddropped plus the matching unexpected_cfgs check-cfg) and the unpacked Cargo.toml shows it applied. - Build-Depends-Arch mirrors the crate's [build-dependencies] (serde, serde-json) and [dependencies] (ruby-prism-sys); the binary Depends mirrors [dependencies] plus the build-dependencies consumers need to run build.rs, and carries ${misc:Depends}.
- librust-ruby-prism-sys-dev is absent from the archive but built by rust-ruby-prism-sys 2.1.0+ds-1, waiting in NEW; the versioned dependency is satisfiable. dh-cargo 34 provides dh-sequence-cargo, so the tests'
dh-cargo (>= 33~)is met. - rules overrides dh_auto_test with
dh_auto_test -- test --all; the crate has no dev-dependencies, so no test-only Build-Depends is missing. The override is skipped under nocheck at compat 13, matching the <!nocheck> markers. - Standards-Version 4.7.4 against Policy 4.7.4.1: current. Changelog 2.1.0-1, unstable, urgency medium, closes nothing; .dsc is PGP-signed and its checksums cover the orig and debian tarballs.
- The orig tarball contains exactly the reviewed tree (crate include list: src/, build.rs, Cargo.toml, Cargo.lock, vendor); no file was pruned by repacking, and no Files-Excluded is needed.
- uscan found the packaged version as the newest upstream release (upstream
2.1.0, packaged2.1.0).
Not confirmed ◂
- The crate tarball ships no LICENSE file, so upstream's own copyright notice was not read; the holder is taken from /usr/share/doc/ruby-prism/copyright, Debian's package of the same upstream repository, rather than from the upstream file itself.
Proposed changes ◂
None.
Uploader's response to the LLM review
The blocker is wrong. LICENSE.md at tag v2.1.0 says Copyright 2022-present, Ruby developers. That replaced Shopify Inc. in https://github.com/ruby/prism/commit/5092bf7f65635bfe6e0a042f98b76fc1010f1378, which is in this release, and the gemspec authors were changed to Ruby developers in the same commit. The Cargo.toml authors are already Upstream-Contact. Naming Shopify here would contradict the notice upstream ships.
