DFSG Assistant LLM REVIEW 0 blocker, 2 important, 5 minor
This is an LLM based review using a Debian Inference based workflow. It was not written by a member of the DFSG team and has not been checked by one. It is not a decision on the package: it may be wrong, and it may have missed things.

Proposes a replacement debian/watch:
debian/watch in version 5 format
Report
DFSG NEW review for sludge version 2.3.1-2
Summary
- Licensing is DFSG-compliant and
debian/copyrightis accurate: No - Packaging is of good quality: Yes
- Issues: 0 blocker, 2 important, 5 minor
- debian/watch: old format (version 4)
- debian/copyright: machine-readable
- Scan before the review: 28 found
Licensing
Nothing non-free turned up: engine and documentation are LGPL-2.1, the GTK Dev Kit GPL-3+, libwebm and the two libvorbis headers BSD-3-clause, utf8.cpp mostly public domain, all mutually compatible. debian/copyright is DEP-5 and matches those groups, but it is not accurate everywhere: source/CommonCode/utf8.cpp holds code derived from libutf8 and from PCRE, the example project ships glyphs of a third-party font whose licence is nowhere in the package, and Files:* omits the 'SLUDGE Developers' holder of movie.cpp/movie.h.
Packaging
Modern and careful: CMake plus debhelper compat 13, correct dh overrides (the ctest exclusion is passed the cmake buildsystem's own ARGS+= way, and man pages are generated from DEP-style XML into the right package lists), sane four-way split, MIME/desktop/man-page integration, and Build-Depends matching what the CMakeLists find. Only small things: the engine embeds libwebm although Debian ships libwebm-dev, and README.Debian still tells users to decompress example files that are no longer compressed.
Issues
important licensing 1. debian/copyright calls all of source/CommonCode/utf8.cpp public domain by Jeff Bezanson, but it contains libutf8 and PCRE-derived code ◂
- Files:
source/CommonCode/utf8.cpp:427,source/CommonCode/utf8.cpp:482,debian/copyright - Basis: checked, in the package or with a reference tool
- Evidence: utf8.cpp:427
/* this code based on libutf8 */and utf8.cpp:482// based on the valid_utf8 routine from the PCRE library by Philip Hazel; the stanza saysFiles: source/CommonCode/utf8.cpp source/CommonCode/utf8.h/Copyright: 2005 Jeff Bezanson/License: public-domain. - Problem: That stanza is later than Files:* and so overrides it for both files, holding out the whole of utf8.cpp as Bezanson's public-domain work. u8_is_locale_utf8 and u8_isvalid are stated in the file itself to come from libutf8 and from PCRE by Philip Hazel (PCRE is BSD-3-Clause, which requires its notice to be kept). Neither holder nor licence is named, so the copyright file misdescribes these files; DEP-5 requires each file's copyright and licence.
- Fix: Restrict the public-domain stanza to Bezanson's code and add the libutf8 and PCRE (Philip Hazel) holders with their licences, including PCRE's BSD-3-Clause text; or ask upstream to rewrite u8_isvalid and u8_is_locale_utf8.
important licensing 2. doc/ExampleProjects/VerbCoin/nicupfontsmall.duc is a third-party font's glyphs with no licence anywhere; debian/copyright attributes it to the SLUDGE authors ◂
- Files:
doc/ExampleProjects/VerbCoin/nicupfontsmall.duc,doc/ExampleProjects/VerbCoin/init.slu:4-6,debian/copyright - Basis: checked, in the package or with a reference tool
- Evidence: init.slu:
# Lets use the ISO-8859-1 subset of the "Hasty Pudding" font to/# get some more characters. Thanks to Rudolf ¦lavka for the font!followed bysetFont ('nicupfontsmall.duc', ...); debian/copyright has no stanza for it, soFiles: *(Copyright: 2000 - 2008 Tim Furnish ...) covers it under LGPL-2.1. - Problem: The file is shipped in sludge-doc and is a sprite bank of the "Hasty Pudding" font by a third party, Rudolf Slávka. No licence for that font appears anywhere in the package, and the copyright file names the SLUDGE authors as its holders, which is wrong for the glyphs. Fonts are copyrightable works, so this is an asset of unknown licensing status.
- Fix: Find out the font's licence (ask upstream, who were given the font), add a Files stanza naming Rudolf Slávka and that licence, or drop the font and use demofont.duc for German as well.
minor licensing 3. Files: * does not name 'SLUDGE Developers', the holder in source/Engine/movie.cpp and movie.h ◂
- Files:
source/Engine/movie.cpp:6,source/Engine/movie.h:6,debian/copyright - Basis: checked, in the package or with a reference tool
- Evidence:
Copyright 2011 SLUDGE Developers. All rights reserved.in both files; the Files:* stanza lists only Tim Furnish (Hungry Software), Rikard Peterson and Tobias Hansen. - Problem: The holder named in these two engine files is absent from debian/copyright, so the file does not describe them accurately.
- Fix: Add
2011 SLUDGE Developersto the Files:* Copyright field.
minor licensing 4. source/DevKit files, which make up sludge-compiler and the sludge-devkit backend, say 'All rights reserved' and carry no licence grant ◂
- Files:
source/DevKit/Common/interface.h:8,source/DevKit/Compiler/compiler.cpp:6,source/DevKit/GraphicalTools/floormaker.cpp:6,source/DevKit/TranslationEditor/translator.cpp:6 - Basis: checked, in the package or with a reference tool
- Evidence:
Copyright 2009 Hungry Software and contributors. All rights reserved.andCopyright 2009 __MyCompanyName__. All rights reserved.; a grep of source/DevKit for any licence wording finds nothing, while debian/copyright's Files:* says LGPL-2.1. - Problem: The headers contradict the licence the copyright file asserts for these works; only README and doc/SLUDGEDevKitHelp/Copyright.html state the project-wide LGPL-2.1. A reader of the sources alone sees an unlicensed, all-rights-reserved work.
- Fix: Ask upstream to replace the Xcode template headers with the LGPL-2.1 notice, and note the discrepancy in debian/copyright meanwhile.
minor packaging 5. Engine embeds libwebm's parser although Debian packages it as libwebm-dev ◂
- Files:
source/Engine/libwebm/mkvparser.cpp,source/Engine/libwebm/mkvreader.cpp,debian/control - Basis: checked, in the package or with a reference tool
- Evidence: mkvparser.cpp is 167 KB of vendored libwebm code plus LICENSE.TXT/AUTHORS.TXT/PATENTS.TXT; Build-Depends names no libwebm, and apt-cache shows libwebm-dev 1.0.0.32-1 in unstable.
- Problem: An embedded copy of a library Debian already ships: it needs its own copyright stanza and gets no security updates from the libwebm package. Debian practice prefers linking the packaged library.
- Fix: Link against libwebm-dev (and drop the embedded copy), or record why upstream's copy has to stay.
minor packaging 6. debian/sludge-doc.README.Debian tells users to decompress example files, but nothing in doc/ExampleProjects is compressed ◂
- Files:
debian/sludge-doc.README.Debian:8-10 - Basis: checked, in the package or with a reference tool
- Evidence:
Then some of the files need to be decompressed:/$ gzip -dr $HOME/ExampleProjects; a glob of doc/ExampleProjects finds no .gz file, and nothing in debian/rules or the CMake files compresses them when installing. - Problem: Stale instruction left over from the old autotools build; users following it get nothing, and the README does not say which files (the .mod tracks) are actually left out.
- Fix: Drop the decompression step.
minor packaging 7. debian/watch is in the old version 4 format ◂
- Files:
debian/watch - Basis: found by the review tooling's own checks
- Evidence:
version=4 - Problem: Version 5 is the current format of
debian/watch. - Fix: Convert it to version 5; a mechanical conversion is under Proposed changes.
Verified ◂
- Read every file in debian/ (control, rules, changelog, copyright, the .install/.manpages/.sharedmimeinfo/.doc-base files, README.Debian, source/format, source/include-binaries, the eight *.1.xml) together with CMakeLists.txt, cmake/Dependencies.cmake and GTK_Dev_Kit/CMakeLists.txt.
- debian/copyright is DEP-5 with the exact copyright-format/1.0 URL; every short name used (LGPL-2.1, LGPL-2.1+, GPL-3+, BSD-3-clause, public-domain) has a stand-alone License paragraph; no Files-Excluded, and no file in the tree falls outside Files:*.
- Stanzas match the notices: GTK_Dev_Kit/*.cpp all carry
GNU General Public License ... version 3 ... or any later version; doc/SLUDGEDevKitHelp/HtmlMenu.html embeds a DHTMLGoodies script under LGPL-2.1+ exactly as its stanza says; GTK_Dev_Kit/support/sludge.lang's Library-GPL-2.1 header matches its stanza; source/Engine/libwebm/LICENSE.TXT and source/Engine/libvorbis/COPYING are BSD-3-clause with the Google/WebM and Xiph holders as listed. - README and doc/SLUDGEDevKitHelp/Copyright.html both state LGPL-2.1 for everything except the GTK Dev Kit (GPL-3+), matching Files:* and the GTK_Dev_Kit stanza; the combined binary is licensed GPL-3+, which LGPL-2.1 section 3 permits.
- Holders the prescan flagged in doc/Credits.html and doc/Credits.rtf (Ben Woodhouse/GLee, Ben Davis & Robert J Ohannessian & Julien Cugniere/DUMB, Jean-loup Gailly & Mark Adler/zlib, Glenn Randers-Pehrson, Andreas Dilger, Guy Eric Schalnat & Group 42/libpng) are third-party licence texts reproduced inside a credits document, not works of their own;
1-1307 USA}and\line 59 Temple Place, Suite 330are wrapped address lines of those texts andFree Software Foundation, Inc.their copyright line.__MyCompanyName__in five files is an unfilled Xcode template; those files were created by Rikard Peterson per their own headers. - GPL and COPYING are the FSF's GPL-3 and LGPL-2.1 texts, whose verbatim copying is permitted; they are not works under the project's licence. The DUMB text quoted in Credits includes joke clauses but licenses no file in the package.
- Scan's binary example-project assets, all in the Dev Kit's own editable formats (documented in SLUDGEDevKitHelp/File_Formats_Used_by_SLUDGE.html) and covered by the example-project paragraph above: doc/ExampleProjects/VerbCoin/demofont.duc, doc/ExampleProjects/VerbCoin/ego/alien.duc, doc/ExampleProjects/VerbCoin/iface/invback.tga, doc/ExampleProjects/VerbCoin/iface/mouse.duc, doc/ExampleProjects/VerbCoin/iface/mushroom.duc, doc/ExampleProjects/VerbCoin/iface/verbcoin.tga, doc/ExampleProjects/VerbCoin/inside/music.mod, doc/ExampleProjects/VerbCoin/inside/music.xm, doc/ExampleProjects/VerbCoin/inside/room.tga, doc/ExampleProjects/VerbCoin/inside/room.zbu, doc/ExampleProjects/VerbCoin/nicupfontsmall.duc, doc/ExampleProjects/VerbCoin/outside/duck.duc, doc/ExampleProjects/VerbCoin/outside/music.mod, doc/ExampleProjects/VerbCoin/outside/music.xm, doc/ExampleProjects/VerbCoin/outside/room.tga, doc/ExampleProjects/VerbCoin/outside/room.zbu, doc/ExampleProjects/Welcome/image.tga (the .duc/.zbu/.flo sources are edited with the sprite bank, z-buffer and floor tools, the .tga are plain images, and the .mod files are excluded from installation by doc/CMakeLists.txt in favour of the .xm).
- doc/SLUDGE Dev Kit Help.chw is a compiled HTML Help file built from the shipped '.hhp'/'.hhk'/'.hhc' and the HTML pages, and is not installed; doc/SLUDGEDevKitHelp/SLUDGEDevKitHelp.helpindex is the Apple help index, excluded from installation by doc/CMakeLists.txt; both have their generator inputs in doc/.
- images/ARROWS.CUR, images/BIGARROW.cur, images/BLOKEY.CUR, images/CROSS.CUR, images/INVIS.CUR, images/MOVER.CUR, images/NOWAY.CUR and images/TARGET.CUR are Windows cursor files, the artwork credited to Erwin Broekhuis and covered by the
images/*stanza; tests/devkit/fixtures/zbuffer.tga is input data for tests/devkit/view_test.cpp. - Build-Depends covers what the build finds: SDL3, vorbisfile, png, DUMB, vpx, OpenGL, epoxy, GTK3, glib; libdumb1-dev and libsdl3-dev were confirmed present in unstable with apt-cache. The engine's runtime dependency xdg-utils is justified by SDL_OpenURL in source/Engine/posixstuff.cpp:239.
- rules: the eight MANPAGES names match the three *.manpages lists;
dh_auto_test -- "ARGS+=-E devkit_views"is the documented way to pass ctest options to the cmake buildsystem (Buildsystem/cmake.pm's test prependsARGS+=itself), and only the EGL-dependent view test is excluded. At compat 13 dh skips override_dh_auto_test under nocheck, so no explicit check is needed. - Packaging split, Multi-Arch, Conflicts/Replaces for the moved sludge-compiler binary, sharedmimeinfo/doc-base/doc installation and the changelog (unstable, version 2.3.1-2) are sane; Standards-Version 4.7.4 is current for this system's Policy.
- uscan found the packaged version as the newest upstream release (upstream
2.3.1, packaged2.3.1). - Every pointer of
debian/copyrightto /usr/share/common-licenses names a file that is there (GPL-3,LGPL-2.1).
Not confirmed ◂
- doc/ExampleProjects/VerbCoin/inside/music.xm, doc/ExampleProjects/VerbCoin/inside/music.mod, doc/ExampleProjects/VerbCoin/outside/music.xm, doc/ExampleProjects/VerbCoin/outside/music.mod and doc/ExampleProjects/Welcome/tada.wav: no author or licence statement anywhere in the tree; they are binary module/audio files I did not inspect, and Files:* attributes them to the SLUDGE authors, which may be wrong.
- Whether source/Engine/libwebm's vendored mkvparser is patched relative to Debian's libwebm 1.0.0.32, i.e. whether switching to libwebm-dev would be a drop-in change.
- No build was run: the CMake install layout (files landing in /usr/share/doc/sludge for sludge-doc, /usr/games for the engine) and the xsltproc man-page generation were checked by reading only.
Proposed: debian/watch in version 5 format ◂
debian/watch is in an old format. This is the conversion made by uscan --update-watchfile, which has not been run against the upstream site: some defaults differ in version 5, so test it with uscan --report before use.
Version: 5

Uploader's response to the LLM review
The first review had one blocker and 3 minor items. I fixed the blocker and one of the minor items, but the new review came up with new stuff.

Each paragraph names every holder found in its files, with the years their copyright lines give, and has the License of the paragraph that covers them now, which it takes the place of for them. Check the License, and whether the files' holders are all there: one a file names only in prose, or in a form the check passes over, is not.
