Changelog◂
syft (1.54.1+ds1-1) unstable; urgency=medium
 .
   * Initial release (Closes: #1124819)
   * Do not ship upstream's .make build-tooling module.
   * Thanks to Rafael Passos for getting upstream to add a COPYRIGHT file
     (https://github.com/anchore/syft/issues/5394), which settled the
copyright holder question for this package.

Comment: Files-Excluded removes non-DFSG license texts that upstream ships as
test fixtures for its license detection engine. Dependencies are not vendored:
they are Debian golang-*-dev packages listed in Build-Depends, resolved by
dh-go through the generated Go workspace.

Copyright: 2020-2026 Anchore, Inc.

Comment:
Upstream names the holder itself, in a COPYRIGHT file that says
"Copyright (c) Anchore, Inc.". It was added on 2026-10-12 in
 https://github.com/anchore/syft/commit/c2ea35ef328795647cfaabaf33e2ce74032f6e07,
after https://github.com/anchore/syft/issues/5394 asked for one, and the
LICENSE appendix was left as the Apache-2.0 boilerplate,
"Copyright [yyyy] [name of copyright owner]".
 .
That file is not in this release: it landed after 1.52.0 was tagged, so the
tarball here does not contain it and this comment stands in for it. The first
upstream release after 2026-10-12 ships the file and this comment can go.
Upstream states no year, so the range above is this repository's history,
from its first commit in 2020 to the current release.

Comment: AIX XCOFF executables used as fixtures by the Go binary cataloger
tests, taken from the Go project's own debug/xcoff testdata. Upstream removed
the accompanying xcoff reader source in 1.44.0 in favour of the standard
 library; only the fixtures remain.

Comment: These are syft SBOM JSON outputs that LIST packages with GPL-2

Comment: Copies of the Debian copyright file of libaudit-common, used as
fixtures for the dpkg copyright parser. The two libpam-runtime files are
byte for byte identical to the libaudit-common one, so they carry the same
holders and licences despite their path.

Comment: A copy of the Debian copyright file of liblzma5 (XZ Utils), used as a
fixture for the dpkg copyright parser. Its own summary states that liblzma is
in the public domain, that the getopt_long code is LGPL-2.1+, that the
gzip-derived scripts are GPL-2+, and that parts of the build system are GPL-2+

Comment: A copy of the Debian copyright file of python, used as a fixture for
the dpkg copyright parser. It reproduces the four Python history agreements in
full, and a section headed "Files with other licenses than the Python License"
with Apache-2.0, Expat and zlib notices. Its GNU Readline and OpenSSL entries
are pointers to /usr/share/doc, not licence texts, and the GPL-2+ above is the
 Readline grant the file quotes.

DFSG Assistant LLM REVIEW 0 blocker, 1 important, 1 minor

This is an LLM based review using a Debian Inference based workflow. It was not written by a member of the DFSG team and has not been checked by one. It is not a decision on the package: it may be wrong, and it may have missed things.

Reviewed 0 hours ago.

Report◂

DFSG NEW review for syft version 1.54.1+ds1-1

Summary

  • Licensing is DFSG-compliant and debian/copyright is accurate: No
  • Packaging is of good quality: Yes
  • Issues: 0 blocker, 1 important, 1 minor
  • debian/watch: version 5
  • debian/copyright: machine-readable
  • Scan before the review: 265 found, 38 not mentioned in this report (193 not listed by the scan, so not checked)

Licensing

Every licence in the tree is DFSG-free: Apache-2.0 for Anchore's own code, with the non-free licence texts (NVIDIA/CUDA, Knuth-CTAN, cuda, dev-kit, libc6, microsoft) excluded from the tarball and the tests that read them skipped, and the third-party fixtures declared with matching short names and full texts. The gap is completeness: the CycloneDX schemas copied into schema/cyclonedx/, the SPDX 2.3 JSON schema and the SPDX licence-list data are covered only by the Files: * stanza, which attributes them to Anchore under Apache-2.0. Their licences are compatible, but their holders are not named and one of them carries no licence statement at all.

Packaging

The packaging is careful and modern: compat 14, dh-go via --with=golang, PIE plus dh-go's -trimpath, a -dev package with a measured Depends, DEP-3 patches with reasons, both lintian overrides and README.source arguing every suppression and workaround, and a correct handling of nocheck. The one real problem is outside the package's own text: the versioned build and runtime dependency on stereoscope 0.3.4 cannot be satisfied by the archive's current 0.3.2-1.

Issues

important licensing 1. Files: * claims 2020-2026 Anchore, Inc. for the CycloneDX schemas, the SPDX 2.3 schema and the SPDX licence-list data copied into the tree ◂
  • Files: debian/copyright (Files: * stanza), schema/cyclonedx/cyclonedx.json, schema/cyclonedx/cyclonedx.xsd, schema/cyclonedx/spdx.schema.json, schema/cyclonedx/spdx.xsd, schema/cyclonedx/README.md, schema/spdx-json/spdx-schema-2.3.json, internal/spdxlicense/generate/testdata/licenses.json
  • Basis: inferred from what was read, not seen directly
  • Evidence: schema/cyclonedx/README.md says "we've included a copy of all schemas needed to validate syft output" and "get the latest schemas from the CycloneDX specifications repo"; cyclonedx.xsd:3 says "Licensed under the Apache License, Version 2.0"; cyclonedx.json:5 has "$comment" : "CycloneDX JSON schema is published under the terms of the Apache License 2.0.". schema/spdx-json/spdx-schema-2.3.json:1-5 has only "$id" : "http://spdx.org/rdf/terms/2.3" and "title" : "SPDX 2.3", with no copyright or licence line. internal/spdxlicense/generate/testdata/licenses.json:2 is "licenseListVersion": "3.20", the SPDX licence list. No Files stanza in debian/copyright matches schema/ or internal/spdxlicense/.
  • Problem: The licence terms are right for the CycloneDX files (Apache-2.0) and nothing here blocks distribution, but the Copyright field of the catch-all stanza is factually wrong for these files: copyright-format 6.8 requires a stanza's Copyright field to collect the notices for the files it matches, and these files are the CycloneDX project's and the SPDX project's, not Anchore's. The SPDX 2.3 schema is worse off: it states no licence of its own, so Files: * silently supplies both the holder and the licence. internal/spdxlicense/generate/testdata/licenses.json is CC0-1.0 data from SPDX, while the same file's own stanza for other SPDX data correctly says "Copyright: SPDX contributors / License: CC0-1.0".
  • Fix: Add stanzas: Files: schema/cyclonedx/* with the CycloneDX project's holder (OWASP Foundation) and License: Apache-2.0; and a stanza for schema/spdx-json/spdx-schema-2.3.json and internal/spdxlicense/generate/testdata/licenses.json naming the SPDX project, with the licence each actually carries (CC0-1.0 for the licence-list data; verify the schema's).
minor packaging 2. Build-Depends and the -dev Depends require golang-github-anchore-stereoscope-dev (>= 0.3.4), but the archive's lists have only 0.3.2-1 ◂
  • Files: debian/control:26, debian/control:149
  • Basis: checked, in the package or with a reference tool
  • Evidence: golang-github-anchore-stereoscope-dev (>= 0.3.4) in Build-Depends and in the -dev package's Depends; go.mod:25 github.com/anchore/stereoscope v0.3.4; the apt-cache tool answers Package: golang-github-anchore-stereoscope-dev / Version: 0.3.2-1 and reports no copy in NEW.
  • Problem: The versioned relationship cannot be satisfied from the reviewing system's package lists, so the build dependencies cannot be installed and the package cannot be built or uploaded until stereoscope 0.3.4 is in the archive (ITP #1135909). This is a dependency-resolution fact, not a prediction about compilation. The lists may be some days old.
  • Fix: Upload golang-github-anchore-stereoscope 0.3.4 first, or lower the constraint to the version actually packaged once the API used by syft is checked against it.
Verified ◂
  • Read debian/ in full: control, rules, copyright, changelog, clean, gbp.conf, lrc.config, README.source, both .install files, .manpages, .examples, the three lintian overrides, patches/series and both patches, source/format, syft.1, upstream/metadata, salsa-ci.yml. debian/copyright is DEP-5 1.0, and every Files stanza path I checked (spdxjson/spdxtagvalue testdata, bitnami, yarn nested-package, r/testdata, test/compare) exists.
  • Files-Excluded works: internal/licenses/testdata/{nvidia-software-and-cuda-supplement,Knuth-CTAN} and syft/pkg/cataloger/debian/testdata/copyright/{cuda,dev-kit,libc6,microsoft} are all absent, and syft/pkg/cataloger/debian/testdata/copyright/ holds only libaudit-common, liblzma5, python and trilicense.
  • Built file cmd/syft/internal/test/integration/testdata/image-go-bin-arch-coverage/test is a Mach-O fixture under testdata/; that whole tree is in DH_GOLANG_EXCLUDES, so it is neither built nor installed.
  • Built file cmd/syft/internal/test/integration/testdata/image-pkg-coverage/pkgs/java/example-java-app-maven-0.1.0.jar is a prebuilt jar fixture; pom.xml and generate-fixtures.md sit beside it and point at syft/pkg/cataloger/java/testdata/java-builds/, whose build scripts and sample projects are in the tree. Its embedded joda-time is Apache-2.0.
  • Built files syft/pkg/cataloger/golang/testdata/glob-paths/partial-binary and syft/pkg/cataloger/rust/testdata/glob-paths/partial-binary are Mach-O fragments used as inputs by the glob/binary tests, not products of this build.
  • Built files test/cli/testdata/image-unknowns/unknown-readable.jar (209 bytes) and test/cli/testdata/malformed/truncated-archive/a-1.0.jar are tiny and deliberately truncated jar fixtures for the Java cataloger's negative tests.
  • The minified file syft/pkg/cataloger/dotnet/testdata/image-net6-asp-libman/src/vendor/lodash.min.js is a 24-byte stub containing only a comment, and lodash.js beside it is 27 bytes: no lodash code is shipped, so the libjs-lodash suggestion does not apply.
  • Archive cmd/syft/internal/test/integration/testdata/image-pkg-coverage/pkgs/java/example-jenkins-plugin.hpi is a 10 KB zip-format Jenkins plugin used as a scan target; the two stereoscope-fixture-image-simple.golden files (syft/format/internal/testdata/snapshot and syft/format/text/testdata/snapshot) are tar images written by stereoscope's imagetest helper and read back by the format tests; syft/source/testdata/rar-archive/example.rar is an 86-byte RAR-format fixture.
  • Compressed files cmd/syft/internal/test/integration/testdata/image-pkg-coverage/pkgs/var/lib/pacman/local/pacman-6.0.1-5/mtree, syft/pkg/cataloger/arch/testdata/installed/var/lib/pacman/local/gmp-6.2.1-2/mtree and syft/pkg/cataloger/arch/testdata/mtree are gzipped pacman mtree test data.
  • Binary classifier fixtures under syft/pkg/cataloger/binary/testdata/classifiers/, each a fragment of a few hundred bytes holding a version string and used as an input to the binary classifier tests (not a program, and not shipped by the binary package): snippets/arangodb/3.11.8/linux-amd64/arangosh, snippets/arangodb/3.12.0-2/linux-amd64/arangosh, snippets/arangodb/3.12.5/linux-amd64/arangosh, snippets/arangodb/3.12.5-2/linux-amd64/arangosh, snippets/aws-lc/1.69.0/linux-amd64/openssl, snippets/bash/5.1.16/linux-amd64/bash, snippets/busybox/1.36.1/linux-amd64/[, snippets/chrome/126.0.6478.182/linux-amd64/chrome, snippets/chrome/127.0.6533.119/linux-amd64/chrome, snippets/consul/1.7.14/linux-amd64/consul, snippets/dart/2.12.4/linux-amd64/dart, snippets/dart/3.0.0/linux-arm/dart, snippets/dart/3.5.2/linux-amd64/dart, snippets/dart/3.6.0-216.1.beta/linux-amd64/dart, snippets/deno/2.9.2/linux-amd64/deno, snippets/envoy/1.11.0/linux-amd64/envoy, snippets/envoy/1.14.3/linux-amd64/envoy, snippets/envoy/1.18.6/linux-amd64/envoy, snippets/envoy/1.20.7/linux-amd64/envoy, snippets/envoy/1.22.10/linux-amd64/envoy, snippets/envoy/1.22.11/linux-amd64/envoy, snippets/envoy/1.23.7/linux-amd64/envoy, snippets/envoy/1.24.5/linux-amd64/envoy, snippets/envoy/1.24.9/linux-amd64/envoy, snippets/envoy/1.28.7/linux-amd64/envoy, snippets/envoy/1.30.1/linux-amd64/envoy, snippets/envoy/1.30.2/linux-amd64/envoy, snippets/envoy/1.30.6/linux-amd64/envoy, snippets/envoy/1.31.2/linux-amd64/envoy, snippets/envoy/1.34.12/linux-amd64/envoy, snippets/envoy/1.34.5/linux-amd64/envoy, snippets/envoy/1.35.4/linux-amd64/envoy, snippets/envoy/1.36.1/linux-amd64/envoy, snippets/envoy/1.36.4/linux-amd64/envoy, snippets/envoy/1.6.0/linux-amd64/envoy, snippets/erlang/17.5.6.9/linux-amd64/beam.smp, together with the negative fixtures negative/gzip and negative/traefik/traefik, which are the same kind of small fragment kept because they must not be classified; the remaining ~195 snippet files are the same thing.
  • cmd/syft/internal/test/integration/testdata/image-pkg-coverage/pkgs/var/lib/rpm/Packages is a 16 KB rpm database fixture, with generate-fixture.sh in the same directory describing how it is made.
  • syft/pkg/cataloger/ai/testdata/safetensors/nomic-embed-475M.header.safetensors is a 15 KB [length prefix + JSON header] capture, and README.md plus extract_header.go beside it document that it is a range-GET from the public nomic-embed image.
  • Rare-licence wording: internal/spdxlicense/license_list.go, internal/spdxlicense/license_test.go, internal/spdxlicense/generate/generate_license_list_test.go, internal/spdxlicense/generate/testdata/licenses.json, schema/cyclonedx/spdx.schema.json and schema/cyclonedx/spdx.xsd carry SPDX licence identifiers as data, where CC-BY-NC-, CC-BY-NC-ND- and BUSL-1.1 are enum values, not grants. internal/licenses/testdata/multi-license:332 is the Unlicense's "for any purpose, commercial or non-commercial", which is a grant; that file's sections (Emscripten MIT and NCSA, Unlicense, WebGPU NCSA, David Schultz BSD) match its declared Expat/NCSA/Apache-2.0/Zlib/BSD-2/BSD-3/public-domain stanza.
  • Holders the scan could not match are all accounted for: the names in syft/pkg/cataloger/debian/testdata/copyright/{python,liblzma5,libaudit-common} and the libpam-runtime copies are quoted inside copied Debian copyright documents, covered by their own stanzas; "Some Place, Inc." and "Someone Cool" are fictional holders in Anchore-created Expat fixtures; Slack Technologies and Plataformatec appear only in metadata describing a scanned application (an Info.plist fixture, a string in syft/pkg/cataloger/apple/cataloger_test.go:54, and the elixir binary fragments). No file with an undeclared third-party notice was found.
  • Full texts are given for every licence not in /usr/share/common-licenses (Expat, ISC, BSD-3-clause, BSD-1-Clause, BSD-2-clause, NCSA, Zlib, PSF-2, BeOpen, CNRI-Python, CWI, public-domain); Apache-2.0, GPL-2, GPL-2+, GPL-3+, LGPL-2.1, MPL-1.1 and CC0-1.0 refer to /usr/share/common-licenses.
  • No images, fonts or sounds in the tree; no vendored Go modules and no debian/cargo-checksum.json.
  • Packaging: debhelper compat 14; the golang addon is loaded with --with=golang and Sequence/golang.pm exists; golang-any 2:1.271 satisfies (>= 2:1.26); dh-go's build method adds -trimpath and accepts -buildmode=pie and -ldflags; Static-Built-Using rather than Built-Using is right because Policy 7.8 only requires Built-Using when a licence requires the source to be retained.
  • override_dh_auto_test is skipped by dh under DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS=nocheck from compat 13, so zip <!nocheck> is the correct marking, and dh-go's test method passes -short and -skip through to go test -vet=off -v -p N.
  • Modules the README calls build/test-only were spot-checked: stripansi, gookit/color, go-snaps, go-test/deep, klauspost/compress, xeipuuv/gojsonschema, sergi/go-diff, magiconair/properties and pb33f/ordered-map are imported only from _test.go files or from excluded trees; blakesmith/ar, used by non-test code in syft/pkg/cataloger/debian/parse_deb_archive.go, is in the -dev Depends.
  • Patches carry DEP-3 headers (0001 Forwarded: not-needed for the repack, 0002 Forwarded to upstream PR 5512) and 0002 addresses a real 32-bit compile failure. Standards-Version 4.7.4 matches the reviewing system's Policy 4.7.4.1. Changelog is unstable, version matches the tarball name, closes ITP #1124819.
  • Every Build-Depends name I looked up exists with a usable version: dh-go 1.69, spdx-tools-golang 0.6.0~rc4-1, bubbly 0.2.2-1, clio, fangs, go-rpmdb, gguf-parser-go 0.26.3-2, go-nix, nvdtools, go-snaps, goleak, go-struct-converter 0.2.1-1, stripansi, go-macholibre, charmbracelet-bubbles 0.21.0-2, scylladb-go-set, go-spdx, distribution-reference, kastenhq-goversion, deitch-magic, google-licensecheck, packageurl-go, cyclonedx-go 0.11.0-1, ulikunitz-xz, howett-plist.
  • Two text files are longer than the 4 MiB the scan read; one is syft/pkg/cataloger/alpine/testdata/very-large-entries (4.4 MB), a generated listing of file entries for the large-package test.
  • debian/lrc.config is a licenserecon configuration only; it is not read by the build or shipped, so its unrelated entries (modernc.org/libc, cyphar/filepath-securejoin) have no effect.
  • uscan found upstream releases with debian/watch; a newer upstream version is available (upstream 1.56.0, packaged 1.54.1+ds1), which is not a fault of the package.
  • Every pointer of debian/copyright to /usr/share/common-licenses names a file that is there (Apache-2.0, CC0-1.0, GPL-2, GPL-3, LGPL-2.1, MPL-1.1).
Not confirmed ◂
  • The build compiles against Debian's versions where go.mod asks for newer ones: CycloneDX/cyclonedx-go v0.12.0 versus packaged 0.11.0-1, charmbracelet/bubbles v1.0.0 versus 0.21.0-2, anchore/clio v0.1.1 versus 0.1.0+git20261016, anchore/fangs v0.1.1 versus 0.1.1+git20261012. dh-go's go.work replace makes Go use the packaged versions; only a build shows whether an API syft uses is missing, and a version change alone is not reported.
  • Whether golang-github-anchore-stereoscope-dev 0.3.4 has been uploaded since the package lists the apt-cache tool reads were copied; if it has, the dependency issue does not apply.
  • autopkgtest was not run; Testsuite relies on dh-go's dh_golang_autopkgtest, which is installed, and on the skip groups in debian/rules.
  • The contents of the prebuilt jar and hpi fixtures were not opened (binary files).
